In a spirit of open-mindedness and discovery I took my two lads to Hednesford a few weeks ago for the pre-68 meet...
I'm am not going into what I thought of the racing, as it's been done to death already.
But one thing intrigued me - why we so many of the spectators wearing yellow jackets!?!
I could perhaps understand people in the paddock wanting hi-vis with cars being lifted about etc (what, say HSE, no hard hats?), but what's with the sea of yellow in the crowds?
Even kids were wearing them, and they were for sale in the resident tat clothing stand...

I think its some sort of fashion statement. It says - "I'm a traveller scrap dealer too".

remember a lot of the people involved in banger racing are usually in the motor trade.
go to the fire cracker at Arena Essex near Thurrock - most of the grandstands are covered in fluro jackets.
The dirtier the jacket the higher the respect - never go in a new one !!!!!

There's worn a lot at Rallys, and make sense as they're warm, help you to avoid getting run over by the cars, and if they get filthy it doesn't matter as they're work jackets anyways. Not so sure of the usefullness of them at a banger track mind.
I want a HIAB.

Just for illustration this kind of answers it IMO, Maybe all these people who help out in the pits(?)/fix up area, then go off and watch while the one driver blasts the car round the track I'm sure we'll have a Banger rep to tell us actually why before long....

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

1. Waterproof 2. Oil / petrol / brake fluid resistant 3. Marks you out as a 'hands on' type of person. Or traveller. Generally someone not to be messed with.
A useful bit of kit for cold / grubby environments any which way.

I'm sure we'll have a Banger rep to tell us actually why before long.... Its for when you are travellering mini-diggers, aluminum roadsigns, peoples pride and joy, etc etc. The high vis jacket makes you look official, like you are meant to be there, and works on the police as a kind of reverse psychology 'they want to be seen therefore they are not likely to be doing anything illegal' ;D Seriously though, I've asked the question before, its just part of the fashion of that scene, like DRFT/Driftworks etc hoodies in drifting and trendy/70 nerd chic clothing on the classic vw scene, and like how snowboarders often wear silly hats and big zip up 'the north face' type jackets. The practicality of it makes it used in a scene, it then becomes 'the worn thing' and gets more and more popular.

Ok- put it this way. Not many Banger drivers are solicitors or barristers. they're road workers, scrap dealers recovery specialists, mechanics, lorry drivers e.t.c and so they use their work clothes to go racing with. Not much point in using a wedding suit is there! Many tracks insist that you wear Hi viz in the pit area and as stated the pits usually empties of bodies when the racing starts. The jackets you see in the grandstands are usually mechanics and drivers. They offer good protection when working on cars in the pouring rain, covered in mud and oil and can be washed easily in a washing machine. They also offer a little protection when your strapped into a banger racing round the track, protection from debris, chafing from the harness and wind chill. Oh and less of the cnut and traveller comments please or ill come round and weigh in your motahs... and strip all the copper out of your cental heating system. *edit* I'm suprised nobody mentioned rigger boots yet! Complete banger racers outfit, proban overalls, rigger boots and Hi viz jacket, all covered in burns, cuts and lots of sump oil. PRE 68 PIC GALLERY! www.fototime.com/inv/0C19D29C401EEC4
