I’ve noticed that the DVLA no longer provide previous owner details nor is it on the V5 now.
Is there another way of doing this?
Reason being I’ve just bought a new daily and I’m trying to trace the spare key

Probably easier to buy a spare key and have it programmed, if it needs it. Even if you get the former keepers (which won't be from the DVLA now), it could always have been lost by a dealer if it's been through the trade.

Is it possible to trace the vehicles history if you're the owner - I thought there was a form that you could get this information from the DVLA?

If it's something old or interesting you can sometimes have some luck by searching the number plate in Google images. May lead you to an Instagram or Facebook. That's how I've managed to find the current owners of two of my old cars.

A new key is about £280 so I was trying everything possible first. The car was on a private plate for a while and I’ve emailed garages that serviced it around that time to see if they had any history for it but I’ve not heard back from any of them sadly. I’ll just have to suck up a new key, hopefully I can be a grown up and not cry.

Hi, Unfortunately you won't hear anything from them because under GDPR they are 'Prohibited from providing any information that will identify an individual'.

Only works if there are images of it online, somewhere like instagram, or flikr etc. I found an ex girlfriends old Pug on an instagram account and got in touch with the new owner (17 year old lad) through facebook. I found my old Polo too, though it took a bit more work. The images don't normally take you direct to an instagram account, often only to a list of images with the same hashtags. Took a bit of digging but I managed to trace down the guy who owns it now. Unfortunately its on his front drive being broken for bits as it got stolen (again!) and crashed.
