Spotted on fb marketplace, thought it must be wrong..... 1984 Yamaha xj900f + parts £250 and only 36 miles away. Message was sent, questions answered, I’ll have it. Cadged a tail lift van from a mate and nipped over to Winsford on Saturday morning, what did we find, well I’ll tell you. A superb condition 44k beauty, he has had to stop riding at 71, it’s too heavy and arthritic hands means he struggles with brake and clutch. Newly fitted matching Bridgestone tyres, new brake pads, heated grips and a (but it did not help him) ‘easy pull’ clutch helper. As can be seen it has a twin headlight PowerBronze full fairing, brass bar ends that he made along with a homemade top box and pannier carrier. She does not run, the black fuel tank is a bit of a leaker, he sourced from Germany a very clean replacement tank, shame it’s blue, I have swapped them this morning, new seals for the tap and fuel level sensor (he supplied the new seals) had a bit of a job working out which of the 7 pipes from the carbs go where, sorted that but could go no further as I need some small hose clamps, I just know though that she will start straight away. Hope to get it started in the morning. Included in the price were so many new and used spares it’s ridiculous, he gave me the new Haynes manual as the old one was grubby, along with a factory book, lots of the spares are brand new, he bought things ‘just in case’..... going from a quick look around ebay I estimate a good £600+ of bits, good tanks go for £250 alone. Boy did I get lucky

That's a good grab.
Bikes are great as a project because even when they don't run, they don't take up a lot of space. Worst thing is carbs... 1 is dark art, synching and balancing 4 is black magic of the highest order.

Good job I have 3 sets of carbs, I set of replacement vacuum’s and slides and a custom balancing tool in one of the boxes

Replacement tank now has a tap and a fuel level sensor, alas fuel is leaking from the carbs and the choke cable is not working. All the homemade rack and supports have been removed and grab rail reinstalled

curse word, I am getting old. I bought one brand new in 1991....I thought that I bought it only the other day. To be honest, I did not have it very long. I For what ever reason I didn't feel very comfortable on it.

Today just to get the choke cable out I have had to remove the fabulous home made brass bar end, remove the superglued on heated grip then remove the l/h handlebar just so I could slide the choke lever and switchgear off so I could separate them and get the cable out 😤

I reckon that is what is known in the trade as a bargain there! looks a nice little project, when done should be a great ride!
Thing about bikes taking up less space though, is it means you can acquire more than one of them....

Where are we at, I worked out where all 7 pipes from the carbs go, put replacement tank on, fuelled it up and gave it a go, 4 churns of the starter killed the battery, collecting a new one at 16.30. Stripped paint from damaged areas of the old tank, 4 leaks, some have been brassed, 1 has been tinned, the main one has thick tank sealer inside and filler outside, my ‘wonder welder’ will sort it all.

After being unused for 2 1/2 years and a change of owner I am happy to report we have a running and sounding sweet Yamaha xj900f 😄 . Alas the clutch cable is not doing as it is supposed, luckily a new one is in with the spares, fitting it tomorrow after oiling it.

After fitting a freshly oiled new clutch cable,,,,,,,, no clutch, head scratching. (Thursday) This very morning I stripped out the release lever and spring to find the previous owner had put it together wrong when he fitted a clutch easi-pull. Cleaned, greased, fitted correctly and BINGO, working clutch, rode it up and down the entry a couple of times, all seems well, I’ll go for an mot in the week.

Happy to report that a visit, first time in a few years, to an mot tester resulted in a pass, warped disc is the only advisory, I rode 7 miles and could not feel anything but I will change them. She rode lovely but I really need to paint the tank 😄
