Wash and wax this morning. Very wise & sensible choice of wax too - It's what I both use & recommend* - its not the cheapest in the market but its not overly expensive either - more to the point it does what it says on the tin - its not hard work either * Never rated the spray on pretend waxes or the stupidly priced stuff either

@grumpynorthener I've been using the gold class hard paste (carnuba based) since about 2001, so been a fan of meguiars. Thought I'd give this synthetic stuff a go.

Well, you know my thoughts on this . It sounds great as well, especially with that Dansk system on it. I can see why a coveted specialist raves about these so much, and that was 10 years ago.

Looks great, and a nice clean looking original one as well.
I tend to use collinite waxes, as they seem to be pretty durable and have been going a while, I would like to try a ceramic coating at some point, but its nice to give the cars a good clean and polish and wax every now and again.

New Pioneer headunit fitted today. Needed an ISO cable adapter, a female to male ariel adapter and a dab ariel. Sound is amazing, speakers are really good which highlights how bad the standard HU had got. FM reception is much better but the DAB is what I listen to.

Lovely Car Matt, I owned a 2004 C2 3.6 around 7 years ago and deeply regretted selling it but lack of use due to travel seemed the sensible option. Fast forward to 3 weeks ago and I am now the proud owner of a 2001 3.4 C4 in rare Rain Forest Green metallic, like you purchased on condition and the phenomenal amount of history the car had collected by the previous custodian of 8 years!
A very emotive vehicle to drive and own with beautiful flanks when you look out of the rear view mirrors, they are a very special car indeed and one of the only cars I look back at once parked like a beautiful mistress!
I look forward to watching your journey with this one.

First proper spannering session on the 996 to fit a polyflex transmission bush. This is an extra bush that fits over the standard metalastic bush, shaped to fit into the voids (there are 3 fairly sizable voids which do a good job of damping down NVH but also allow a lot of movement). As the engine and box hang off just 3 mounts, the factory transmission bush at the nose of the box can get a tad soft over time too. This obviously creates more movement which in turn naffs up the gear shift. The shift on this car is pretty sloppy. Getting gears can be an curse word at times which is worse when cold. As it's done 112k the second third synchros aren't be the freshest, then sloppy engine mounts make it worse coupled to a load of worn out plastic bushes in the gearshift mechanism ( the whole shifter apart from the stick is plastic ☹️). The plan is to overhaul the gearshift (more on that at a later date) but first need to do this gearbox mount then the 2 engine mounts (that'll be the next job). Total time to do the job, including getting all the tools out, putting the car on the ramps, tootling back and forth to the garage etc was 4hrs split over 2 2hr sessions. I didn't rush as it was the first time under the car, so I had a good nose about too.

Very nice.
I almost went for a 996 to replace the E46 M3. Definitely a good time to buy well cared for examples like yours.

New dipped beam bulbs fitted. Fig lights, main beam and dipped beam all use a separate H7 bulb. Dipped beam seemed to have a yellowish, old bulb hue so ordered a set of Osram nightbreaker 'laser' bulbs. The whole unit slides out using a special Allen key that unclips the unit from inside the 'frunk'. Old bulbs were standard Osram units but a few years old. New bulb on the left, old one on right

Not much difference but the new bulbs give better distance. 996 bulbs are notoriously cr@p. Swapped out the 501 sidelight bulbs for some LEDs I had spare as the old bulbs had some blackening. New nightbreakers Old Osrams

Ah, that carpark isn't the best to show the results . I do wonder what's been done with the old building next to it. Not a bad shout on the NightBreakers .

I too have just jumped on the 996 bandwagon and it looks like we're doing similar things! I've just fitted solid engine mounts along with a new water pump, shortshift and head unit.
I'd highly recommend taking the front wheels and front bumper off. As you say this gives you a good chance to have a poke around (read: start a shopping list) but mainly is a great opportunity to remove the leaves and leaf mulch that builds up between the rad and AC condensers.
I did mine this weekend and the amount of curse word in there is startling. Car running a good bit cooler now too!

I did mine this weekend and the amount of curse word in there is startling. Car running a good bit cooler now too! Already done. Rads are clear as the bumper had the grill mesh modification early on. it also had the radiator fan resistor mod too. Rads are fairly new, plus the car had a new header tank and the hard to fit oil air separator. Temp gauge needle sits in the middle of the 'zero' in the 80 on the temp gauge, so coollant is perfect. Next job - blueprinting a 997 shifter then swap out - oil refresh to 15w50 - rear brake overhaul inc handbrake inspection Longer term - exhaust manifold and bolts

That's good. I'm gonna do the mesh mod on mine too I think.
I'd love to fit a proper exhaust manifold but not sure I can face buying a drilling jig to get rid of those troublesome bolts! I'm lucky mine has had the A/O separator fixed too.

Nice. A 996 is on my (rather long) dream car list. It's between all the BMWs and a DB7.
