Hello Long time lurker here made an account sometime this year and thought i'd post something Here's my G reg Merc 190 carb'd 2.0 m102 5 speed. Bought as a first car many many years ago for a few hundred quid but ended not becoming my daily, at somepoint 16v/sportline seats were added lots done so far including suspension refresh, bilstein shocks/eibachsprings, brakes from a 16v (cosworth) repaint/derust, full stainless exhaust and LED lights from classic car leds Plenty more work needing doing including new rear subframe bushes (going to polybush and powdercoat everything I can underneath and add adjustable camber/toe arms at the same time ), sort the whole audio system and dynamat around the speakers/boot, door cards are blown so they need sorting few bits of the fabric trim are faded might add power windows. tempted with an engine swap either a M111 230 kompressor or a larger 2.3 M102 and twin carb it. Anyway some pictures Crappy picture on an old phone when I first got the car home after I attacked the paint with some tcut, rear arches and front wings had a bit of rust Painting brakes Exhaust Interior clean before the Retrorides show at shelsley walsh hillclimb New gearleather/3d printed frame and satin wrapped surround LED lights (front/rear dome lights, numberplate, Reverse lights, brake, tail lights and indicators) Just some pictures

190 w201 fan myself I’ve got a diesel 190. I have to say yours is in nice condition I really like it. When I did my rear subframe rebuild I bought a second subframe and built everything up on that then bolting it back in a lot easier than stripping and rebuilding. 👍🏻

If you are looking at putting a different engine in your car it might be better fitting a w124 rear subframe as there are more differential options and rations that will fit w201 subframes are very limited to what size diff can be fitted.

Good shout on the 124 subframes I might have a friend with one in his shed too

Yep, as loudsam said there's no need to fit those plates. The only thing the sub frame requires is good bushes and I wouldn't bother with poly one's, good quality Lemforder or Meyle HD will be more than enough. If you want to go poly anywhere on the rear the lower arms is the place.

Planned on doing lower control arms front, rear subframe and swaybar bushes in poly, they're not that much more than Lemforder bushes any reason not to go poly?

The last W201 I drove with poly bushes wasn't great to drive, simply too harsh and I'm glad I never fitted them to my previous 190's. Of course that's just personal opinion, horses for courses and all that. But, I don't think they really improve the driving dynamics either or if they do the trade off didn't seem worth it.. You could compromise and just try fitting poly to the front of the subframe where the bushes are under the greatest strain. Regardless, keep up the good work and I'm really looking forward to your engine transplant. The M111 230 Kompressor (M62) would be brilliant, with a standalone ECU and some S/C mod's you'd be looking at 280 bhp + with a great torque spread too.

That makes a lot of sense, I do like how the car rides at the moment even with the 17inch wheels, bilstein shocks and eibach springs it still feels like a Mercedes still smooth and only the rougher roads ruining the ride. Think I'll try sticking with Rubber for the subframe and go with poly for the lower control arm bushes and swaybars, hopefully a nice compromise. still way off the engine transplant, need to figure out if I'm going to use a newer 6 speed or try and find a 16v box. I know people use w201 boxes and some use newer 6 speeds. ideally it would be great to find a whole donor car with a 6 speed. and like you said a standalone ECU, a nice exhaust manifold (my current stainless 2.25 system should be fine) a smaller s/c pulley and ported m62

You won't find an M111 M62 with a six speed. Only M111 M45's came with a six speed but using that with standalone would still be good but won't produce the same power as the M111 M62. You could always fit a six speed (W203 c270 cdi has good ratios from memory) to M111 M62. As for using the 16V dogleg Getrag, they are really strong but I don't see any advantage over the six speed other than they have cable drive speedo just like your current five speed. Oh, and good 16V Getrag's are not cheap either. If you want to get something from a 16V, try and find a 2.3-16 LSD (non ASD) and a 16V steering box, those would be a far better upgrades. The simple way initially would be to stick with your current box and go from there, you can change boxes anytime. Just for reference, the M62 with a 220mm crank pulley (standard 195 mm iirc) and milled down S/C pulley from 94 mm to 87 mm (keeping the clutch operational) will give a solid 13-14 psi @ the T/B and it would be still be below maximum rev's . That would be 280 bhp + with the right size injectors & intercooler. But it would ideally need to be ported to keep down IAT's. As for the poly bushes, as I said previously it's partly personal preference so don't take my view as gospel. You can always try the poly and if you don't like them, it's no biggie to fit the rubber one's instead. And you're spot on about the Merc suspension, it's first class especially the five link rear end - the basic design is still used by Merc to this day. I'm about to start renewing my rear suspension bushes including the diff and all the arms too, they're going to be all done with good quality rubber but the front rear sub frame bushes will be Meyle HD one's. Bear in mind I'm older than you and my back sometimes ain't great

Very very nice, I was close to going for a W201 a few years back but I bought a BMW E36 in the end. Maybe I'll get one next..? I love the red interior!
