Check the top and bottom rad hoses when warmed up there should not be a massive temperature difference and give them a squeeze you should be able to feel plenty of water in them, is the water circulating around the heater? if not undo a heater hose and see if you can get more water into the heater pipes When its cold let the pressure out of the cooling system by opening the cap, start the car up and see how quickly the system pressurizes, if its very quick then it may be head gasket

Once you have checked the above and that the coolant cap is ok, To rule out headgasket etc put the overflow tube from the coolant reservoir in a clear bottle half full of water, if when it's at normal temperature theres a steady stream of bubbles which increase as you rev the engine theres a good chance you have a problem, you can buy a kit to check the coolant for exhaust gas to be sure.
