This started off where most great idea's are born, in the pub!! our own to be precise...
After attending 2 Weekenders, both with nothing to show for , the idea formed between me and my wife to get us a Retro ride for 2020’s edition.
But were Skint.........
3 years ago we fulfilled our mutual mega dream and started our own Craft Beer Pub in Hoorn the Netherlands, named “Proeflokaal Charlies” and had to sell everything.
All our retros, classics ( but one , but that is technically my dads) , automobillia and parts I accumulated over the last 25 years to fund the purchase of our dream pub.
And after years of dragging my heavy feet to work every day, I finally jump out of bed most mornings , smiling and doing what I do best and love most!! All the positive feedback, 5 star reviews and ratings make all our long working hours and short nights worthwhile.
Sooooo , 2 months ago,
we catered a party for a group of people on a Sunday, and i wore my favorite t-shirt I got from my girls at last years Weekender.
My grey “oh so retro” shirt with a Fiat 126 on the front.
The old man , celebrating his birthday , came up to me and we talked cars , the ones he loved and had in past life.
I told him our story and he was impressed with ours and my knowledge of obscure brands and models. So years of reading classic car magazine reading during
classes in school finally paid off!! The evening came to an end and the gentleman asked if i would be interested to take his last classic car as part of the payment of the catered evening.
Huh?
NOOooo said my brain ,
Of Course said my mouth. That’s a first....
The car in question is a Talbot Samba Convertible, made in 1984, one of the last off the line with the 5 speed, optional extra gearbox and a 1360cc engine with 72 prancing horses.
here the obligatory first fill up pictures at the petrol station.
By the way , it’s the same engine which can be found in 1st gen. Peugeot 205’s , citroen Visa’s and Talbot Samba rally’s. Its had 2 owner from new (the last guy is now 91!!!) He cried when we were loading it onto the car ambulance. He is selling his farm and adjacent buildings , so the Samba really
had to go. It has 80000 kilometres on the clock. Yep, that’s not a mis-type, its really 80000 and something kilometres.. Every single APK ( MOT ) is with it and every bill for services, and a lovely pile of spares. It’s been kept in the barn all its life and got wiped down when its got wet!
There is only one spot of slight bubbling and that is on the passenger side rear wing and there is a small dent caused by someone reversing into it.
I have searched and could not find one single piece of rust anywhere on it!
All known rust spots are attended and fixed, last MOT’d and on the road in 1991. It’s professionally painted Green-Ish, all door shuts and enginebay are done as well , and the sides are covered by the most hideous 90’s paintsplash stickers in fantastic 90’s neon colors. Tires are 3 sizes too big for the alu rims ( looks like off road mud and snow tires )
It comes with One, yes one! electric window ( on the passenger side!! ) hearing aid beige dash and wheel, grey trimmed seats with fellow stitchin and really bad faded headrests , so dirty from being stored with the windows down, you wouldn’t dare to put your head against them. A stack of spares with 4 thermostats , a new waterpump , oil filters and a assortment of bulbs and plugs with new leads.
By the amount of thermostats and multiple waterpumps and other cooling stuff in the spare parts stash , I suspect a light heat issue , but Given how easy it was to free off the brakes ( All NEW!!) there’s a good chance that the engine can be revived, it must have been a pretty dry environment in the back.
After 25+ years the clutch and all fluids and filters will all need renewing as a matter of course!
Oh , and did i mention it came with not one, but 2 Spare convertible roofs in black? Thats already an €600+,- a pièce bonus!!
Of course it’s gifted with a non-functional 80’s aftermarket car alarm for which they hacked parts of the loom and into the dash for to fit the biggest LED bulb i’ve ever seen!! so on the lookout of some dash trim/switch panels on evilbay.
Other than that needs a strip out , a deep deep clean and spruce up...good times!
I Feel as excited as the little ones on christmas morning!!! It's the weirdest handling, oddest driving positioned, daftest gear Knobbed, ugliest car I've ever owned.
I love it!!
I'll be figuring out what I want and need to do to it over the coming weeks.
Budget is non-existent (see Pub buying above ) so it's cheap or free mods only and
the deadline for may 2020 is set.
Hope were in time to apply for the BillyNoMates car club this year.
So no time to loods, i bought a haynes manual and started stripping it down.
I've already Got it running (very rough though) on the Farm.
With a new battery, some daft luck and fresh fuel, we drove it onto the car ambulance with a screaming waterpump wich was packing up and absolute no brakes at all. New waterpump was already in the spares pile , so fitted that last week.
The brakes need a new mastercylinder
Anyway, heres the nice "sidewaypics" "as found" which the old man sent us
I notice that I can lower it for free in the rear, though I assume I can only go a couple inches before I destroy the handling (if it can be described as handling..)
hope the pictures work ....
So far, we fixed the brakes , got it running , fixed the waterpump and belt, fixed the horn ( bad earth) fixed the electronic window (bad earth) , fixed the wipermotor (bad earth) , changed the airfilter (actual earth) wich we extracted from worlds biggest aircleaner,
And the coolest of them all, i think i fixed my dash!! It's broken and i needed a new one anyway, so why not check it out and learn some new stuff. So I took my non functional dash out , got the multimeter out , found a website wich told me how to actually use a multimeter 😳 and found a burned out soldering connection. So i bought a soldering iron at our local euroshop , found a website on soldering 😀 and put down a new solder on an actual printplate!! After cooling down , we measured the connection again and it actually gave an Ohm reading!! So pround i actually forgot to take pictures of the proces!!
Next on the list is fixing the alternator.
Hope it is one with brushes.......
