Lotus engines go for silly money now no idea about the car though a 1600 kent could be made to make similar power to a std twin cam with out too much trouble but they are getting difficult to get hold of and not as cheap as they were. A zetec would be contemporary to it's build date more powerfull than the Lotus, and pretty much a straight swap if you use the RWD conversion parts widely available for escorts etc.

If the 6 clock dash is an original Lotus 140mph item, that would be worth a good few quid too but it looks like they may have cut it about a bit. I think it’s probably best to just drive and enjoy it as is. It will become a project otherwise

Looking again it’s not cut up, they’ve added an edging strip around the top.

If the engine and box are in good shape youd get a good price- as much as I'd like it!
I'd stay away from an Essex however you'll be adding a lot of weight for some improvement on torque.
As stated earlier a zetec or an mx5 as you've got the engine and box plus they're plentiful.
For a v6 maybe a jag s type? There's manual box conversion parts also

It still seems to have the Escort registration number, if it's still using the original vin and vehicle description, Given the stupid value of twin cam escorts the biggest return would probably be to build all the parts back into a new escort shell.

I don't mean this to be a loaded question but is that legit?

If its still registered as an escort I guess you are just restoring it to original spec.

I guess the key element to that is 'new' shell.

I know you can get new mk2 shells , not sure about mk1 though.

its an autotune gemini kitcar with a reg-date from the 1969 donor.
i wonder why you ask, as the V5c is stating clearly: "autotune gemini kit" under "make"
in year 1996 when SVA came into force (today called IVA) kit-registratios could be updated, retaining the original donor registration and year, but the make was corrected with the one of the kit-manufacturer:
a former 1969 escort, body type sports, was "converted" into a 1978 autotune gemini, body type sports.
several kits missed this amnesty period and are nowadays declared as "illegal"...this said there are chances , if you have enough prove of the history, that a friendly DVLA employee will still do the upgrade of the V5 or, if he isnt so friendly, he will sent you straight away to IVA test...
but with your registration everything looks fine.
