A concours winning Mk1 MG Metro Turbo with an incredible 7,359 miles from new.
EQUIPMENT
All steel unitary construction, laminated windscreen, bronze tinted glass, halogen headlamps, opening rear quarter lights, ventilated front disc brakes, uprated suspension, wheel arch spats, front spoiler, Turbo decals, twin rear fog lamps, twin door mirrors, light-emitting diode boost gauge, tachometer, digital clock, radio/stereo cassette player, asymmetrical-split folding rear seats, two-speed wipers with flick wipe, heated rear window, rear wash/wipe, cigar lighter, choke warning light, leather covered steering wheel, load space lamp, glovebox with carpet lining. Dealer options; Metro rubber floor mats, rear seat belts.
EXTERIOR
Exquisite in every respect and one for the perfection seeking collector. The Arum White paintwork, (Code NMF), gleams brightly with a factory original gloss shine uniform throughout. The special moulded front spoiler incorporating brake cooling ducts and moulded wheel arch spats are perfect. Colour coded accessories and lower sides requested by the original owner have been put back to Mk1 factory specification setting off the red Turbo decals. All immaculate white accessories are included such as twin door mirrors and wiper arms. Wheel arch apertures are spotless and this car is worthy of its Concours winning trophies. The front and rear light clusters and even both side repeaters and rear fog lamps are factory fitment with the Austin logo to the lenses. This ultra-rare Hot Hatch is virtually perfect.
INTERIOR
Prepare to enter the 1980’s with this as-new Austin Rover MG cockpit. The Grey herringbone/Grey velour seat facings and padded headrests with red piping are perfect and the ribbed finish red carpeting with ‘MG’ motif moulded into a drivers heel mat is unworn. Rubber Metro floor mats have protected the few miles that the car has been used for. The red front and rear seat belts and Turbo badge on the centre of the steering wheel remind the driver this was the ultimate performance MG and at the time, the fastest ever MG saloon, double the power of a Metro City! All features work within the colour-keyed facia including the very cool light-emitting diode boost gauge and radio/stereo cassette player with integral speakers in the door bins. This really is the best.
ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
Perfection continues under the bonnet with everything correct, gleaming and fully working. The turbocharger installation, developed in conjunction with Lotus, has resulted in a 93bhp with superbly progressive power delivery. A top speed of 112mph is quoted with 0-60mph in under 10 seconds. Breakerless electronic ignition with anti-knock control and an oil cooler were all standard features to the flagship Turbo model. Even the turbo cooling pipe crudely stuck to the underside of the bonnet from factory and often missing remains attached! The 4-speed all synchromesh gearbox is light and precise with none of the issues often prevalent due to the higher engine power.
WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
The unique Turbo Cast alloy wheels with flush style hub and wheel nut covers are perfect and have never been refurbished. The conscientious first owner removed them in the cars early years and placed them into storage with excellent factory Dunlop SP Sport D3 tyres measuring 165/60 HR13. These have now been refitted to continue the concours theme and an immaculate second set are supplied with the car. The servo-assisted duel circuit brake system with ventilated front discs are gripped by 4-piston calipers and modified rear drums with a compensator valve to pull the car up quickly and safely.
HISTORY FILE
Prepare for utter amazement with this history file to verify the mileage, condition and provenance. The car has had two registered owners from new and was supplied by Lex Mead of Bexleyheath to first owner, Mr Hugh Watson Wickham-Lamont on the 21st March 1984. The new vehicle invoice reveals a total price paid of £6,073 and the Lombard North Central finance booklet is included for the £3,000 borrowed on finance. Mr Lamont was very protective over this car and retained every service receipt, tax disc, MOT certificate and sales literature documentation. After six years and 6,532 miles Mr Lamont took the vehicle off the road in fear of it being stolen or damaged and stored it off the ground in his centrally heated garage. The car was run on a regular basis to keep the oils flowing. In 1999 the car re-emerged and was displayed by him at the Guildford MG Show which soon progressed into Regional and National Concours wins. Once he felt the car had achieved the standing it deserved it was put back into storage and venturing out the occasional MOT. A letter written by Mr Lamont details the history of the car along with Concours score sheets, trophies, show tickets and programmes. His ownership spanned 30 years until 2014 when the second registered keeper Mr Johnson became the owner. This pampered example is without question one of the best in existence and a very rare opportunity for the most discerning collector.
MOT October 2020, HPI Clear.
