Thanks for the clarification on the rust pushing the panels apart. I just had to deal with this on another project here and ended up cutting the top layer away so I could see what was going on underneath. (the same thing!)

If the owner wants clear lenses in place of the orange ones, they are readily and cheaply available and really help disguise the MG B origin of those units. Thank you for showing the wing fix too, that helps explain what was happening on mine which had done the same bulging out on the strengthening section and I wasn't exactly sure of the cause. That is a great idea on the lenses and I have already ordered them - the Sprite lamps that were on there were clear lenses and the whole frontal appearance of the car would be better with clear lenses - Thanks Chris

Rust kill solution, I've found is quite rubbery, high build, dries the same texture as you applied it (bubbles, brush strokes etc)
I wondered how you deal with it on cosmetic areas? Seems counter intuitive to sand it off?

Darren - I just try to be has neat has I can in the more cosmetic areas - I give it a quick abrasive keying but has you say you don't need to be sanding it back off - I then just go over it with either a polyester spraying filler or a high build primer

Presumably no 1” thick areas of pog under your paintwork!

Chris I am endlessly impressed with your results, your professionalism, OCD tendencies and your tolerance of us mere mortals asking you daft questions For my own daft question, once you have flatted back and profiled the areas with filler, how deep do you think the filler actually is? Presumably no 1” thick areas of pog under your paintwork! Correct no thick areas allowed whatsoever - I like to get the panel within a realistic tolerance ideally sub 3mm before I commence skimming the profiles but just sometimes that is not possible simply down to the fact that I'm often working with vehicles that are 50 + years old that have seen a life and in the vast majority of cases have been subject to varying degrees of sub standard work by others - deeper areas can always be lead loaded if required - quite often you can end up with a vehicle that has to be completely skimmed in order to true the profiles and to most it may appear that the car is smothered in filler - but these are fine skimming coats that have been applied - on previous restorations I have made a note of what quantity of filler has been applied - I think on the last Javelin I did it was 16 kilos - however I use a vacuum / dustless sanding system - hence I start with a empty vac bag and I weigh them once full / complete - I took 11 kilos back off the car in dust - leaving 5 kilos on the car - still sounds like a lot but then when you divide the panel areas in to an average size (I got to 22) then divide the number of average panel sizes in to the 5 kilos the net result was less than 230 grams per panel - which in reality is nothing - if want the vehicle filler free your only option is reskin the car - fine if its a vehicle that's worth several hundred £k on completion - but on a vehicle that's worth £20k and having to spend several times the vehicles value on having panels remade that are no longer obtainable would be a bit of a pointless exercise - long winded but hopefully a worthwhile answer PS - No such thing has a daft question - always better to ask than guess or assume (for which I credit my old school foreman / manager from my apprentice days) Here's one that I did earlier And the end result

Some minor odds done on the car but the vast majority of my day was spent running around collecting things for it - paint & paint materials / new floor panels / engineering supplies / welding gas - 100 mile + round trip

What. Is the strange head on the gas bottle? Rian - Multi purpose shield that protects the valve & regulator (Hobbyweld Ultra bottles have an integral regulator) the very top section is for handling the bottle - allows you to just lean the bottle in a little and while holding the top section that you refer to (loose in one hand) you can turn the bottle with your other hand to propel it across the floor - in fact you can move it single handed - its lot better than carrying it

More progress Offside doors with final profiling glaze applied Then profiled back ready for primer New boot floor trial fitted - just needs the holes drilled & countersunk to suit the retaining flange Front suspension bump stops for the lower arms - due to the nature of where they are mounted they are a pain to fit without removing the bottom suspension arm - which is a proper pain has this controls the torsion bar suspension - so the easy way is to bond the nuts into the rebates - leave to cure - then its a 5 minute job to fit them rather than a several hours job

James James - Yep Mark has resolved that issue well & truly for me - I would like to think I'm on the home straight - should get the remaining prep done and hopefully the car into paint over the hols - then just a simple manner of building it all back together - ideally it needs to be gone asap (not that I want to rush it) has there is quite a queue waiting and I need to hit the ground running come Jan

Makes my life a lot easier and its a far more resilient / durable material than standard ply / marine ply - over the next 12 months or so I shall be getting Mark to pattern up the floors for the Jowett Jupiter & the Bradford Van so they can be added to the clubs parts range
