I'm planning on having a look at a 07 Mercedes GL this Saturday with intentions of buying it (the car is advertised on Ebay) but now I'm having second thoughts because the Vehicle Tax ran out January this year and it has not been taxed since (it is Moted and insured though) just wondered what peoples thoughts were on this as i have done a HPI check and everything else checks out Thanks Guys

not sure why it would be of concern. just make sure you know the cost of taxing it from when you get it.

you will only be liable from the day you buy it, whatever fines the last owner incurred, not your problem.

I own cars which I haven't taxed for 15 years. If I sold them tomorrow it's got nothing to do with the new owner.

My concern would be, what else have they cheaped out on? Why would they have “cheaped out” on anything? Who in their right mind would tax a car they aren’t using?

My concern would be, what else have they cheaped out on? Why would they have “cheaped out” on anything? Who in their right mind would tax a car they aren’t using? Above it says he's been using it daily while it's been untaxed!!! That's the most intriguing part - has he just said he's used it daily to gloss over underlying issues that have really caused it to be off the road since January? If he has been driving it daily how has he not racked up fines / clamps / car removal? Has he been using fake plates? If so is anything else not legit about the car? A few questions to investigate on top of the stress of usual car purchase IMHO.

TBH if he’s not been nicked by now it probably won’t happen, i inadvertently ran one of my fleet untaxed for six months, after the taxdiscs stopped being produced, its probably one of the most eyecatching vehicles on the road, i ran it up to North Yorkshire and down to the south coast several times during this period, and nowt happened. Retaxed it from the day i realised it wasn’t taxed, never heard anything, not even a sorn warning,.

Wednesday When i messaged the seller about viewing the car this Saturday he seemed quite keen on the idea but I tried to phone the seller last night but there was no answer, so I will again try again tonight and if he dosent answer the phone i will just forget about the car.
I'm in the West Midlands and the car is in Blackburn

Just worried about possible fines and such, the guys been using it daily untaxed since it ran out,I missed the bit about using it daily, but as it’s MOT’d and insured I’d guess it’s more likely to an oversight or the guy is a trader and has trade plates possibly. Why would anyone have any concern about other people’s fines? You’re buying a car, not someone else’s debts...

If you haven't already done so it's always checking the MOT history as this can provide some idea of how well, or how poorly, the car has been looked after. If it's failing on a load of stuff every year and the same MOT advisories are cropping up year after year it suggests lax or absent maintenance.

Ensure you get a receipt and the V5/c dated as stated by others, wouldn't want them saying 'no i sold that ages ago to a bloke in the West Midlands.....' Sods law you get ANPR'd the first time you drive it so best be sure as you don't want to play DVLA ping pong. If he's dodgy on not paying VED deliberately i'd proceed with caution on any sale.

I’ve found the car for sale and it’s with a trader, so it wouldn’t have been used daily whilst in his care, unless he’s taken a fancy to driving it and could have done so on trade plates. Also, the MOT expired earlier this month and it hasn’t been taxed since January 2018, not this January.
A few things point to it having been standing for a while at some point. Also, most of the cars he has for sale seem to be “too cheap”. Based on similarities to other traders I know, I have a feeling the cars may well be finance repossessions or something along those lines.

Everything should be done online nowadays for immediate effect. I would always ensure that the transfer is completed before I took a vehicle I bought or someone else took away a vehicle I sold.

Untaxed alone is no worry, as people said tax it as yours before driving away and make sure the receipt is dated and timed (I always do this in case of for example a parking or speeding fine earlier that day).
If it seems more dodgy, as it does, just forget it, there are plenty more cars on the market, just pick one that doesnt make you feel uneasy, its not worth worrying about, just buy a car that feels right.

Spoke to the seller earlier this evening, I’m still going to see the car tomorrow. He was quite upfront about the tax when I asked he said he forgot to tax it and only realised a few months later, because he never had any fines etc he just decided to run with it as he only used it to drive a short distance to his work and back
I’m pretty sure he’s not a trader The car is MOTed till end of December this year
Apparently he has a stack of receipts for new suspension airbags and a compressor and transmission service to name a few
I will try and update this tomorrow after I’ve seen the car Thanks for the advice
