1972 Hillman Hunter - 1.5L - Minx/MK1 Front end - MOT/Tax Exempt
Thread: forum.retro-rides.org/thread/195941/hillman-hunter-minx-front-projec
Bought this as I fell in love with it 3 years ago - pains me to put this up for sale, but it spends 90% of it's time stored in a garage these days. I did have plans for an engine swap but as life does - other things have taken precedence. I'd rather sell it onto someone who will give it some love rather than it rot away waiting for me to have the time/money for it!
It's a HIllman Hunter that I believe had a small knock years back (I have a pictuer of it somewhere) and the front end was replaced with one off of a Minx (or a MK1 Hunter - same thing) - to be honest I much prefer this front end. The front end is red oxide and the rest was rattle canned blueish by the previous owner and he whacked some stickers on. It's faded, patina'd and looks pretty cool. 13" Slotmags.
1.5L 4 Cyl engine with a 4 speed gearbox (no overdrive) & manual choke - it's quick in the town as it has such short ratios, don't expect much over 65 on the motorway unless you want to blow your eardrums/the car up (it has no rev counter or limiter!). Sounds like an old car should. Starts, drives, stops well. It's a strong engine that does actually have a fair bit of getup and go.
MOT Exempt since last year and TAX Exempt. Last MOT in 2018 passed with 1 advisory (gearbox mount) and it's surprisingly clean underneath. Speedo reads 39k - have no reason to believe it's not right but can't verify.
Work I've done since having it (3 years?):
- New front disks and pads
- New water pump
- Rewired the dodgy wiring that was in the engine bay
- New head gasket
- Service (plugs, leads, oil ect)
- Backbox replaced w/Straight pipe
- Had a metric curse word TON of fun in it
- Made many, many memories and met lots of cool people
- it has side indicators from a Punto wired in (to pass the MOT - wasn't sure if they were needed so put them in!)
Bad bits:
- Rusty bottom of front doors (but have 2 replacement doors to go with it)
- Throttle cable needs adjusting (choke sometimes sticks a bit)
- Drivers window has fallen off of the runners (Stays up with a bit of paper!)
- Speedo doesn't work (double edged sword, mileage doesn't go up = unlimited limited mileage policy...)
- Small rust hole on the front wing
- Small dent in the rear corner from someone in the last 45 years reversing it into...something I guess
- Small exhaust leak in the mid section I believe, bit raspy
- Drips a bit of oil but not enough to worry about or show on the dipstick, even after months of sitting and sporadic use
- I don't think the cooling system is quite airtight as it loses a little water if sat for long periods - new engine piping was on the cards but not had time
- Interior carpets smell of wet dog - need to rip them out really
- one of the rear leaf springs has gone a bit flat which makes the rear look a bit lopsided
- Front left tyre has a slow leak
I have a LOAD of spares to go with this, including but not limited to:
- Front Doors
- Rear bumper
- Front suspension & brakes
- Lovely mint cond steering wheen from a Duluxe
- Full original blue interior (rare!)
- Centre console
- Wiper motors
- Full Smiths heater
- Smiths rev counter
- lots more. Whenever I've seen something Hunter related I've tended to pick it up.
- Everyone thinks it's a Ford
- Purists will moan for it not being original (god make it stop)
- People will keep offering you money for it whenever you park in a public place
- You'll hear the phrase "They don't make 'em like that any more" 6 times a day
Pics:
I'm being totally honest - the bad point seem a lot but they really aren't. If you're interested, best to come and see it really has character. Less than 90 or so left I believe. It has no filler anywhere on it - and you're free to check.
Everyone seems to love it and you really do meet some cool people who remember having one back in the day. Kids think it's a race car.
Based in Canterbury in Kent - looking for £1700ono.
Viewing welcome most evening and weekends - you can drive it if you show proof of insurance (be it 3rd party on your current policy or temporary)
I think that's a fair price given what some of the spares are worth and it's an honest, albeit different example of a cool old car. Dry stored for the past year and a half.
Although cash is king, and I shouldn't be open to swaps - I do fancy something fast even though I need the money so...try me maybe. I like convertibles. I'm a nice guy, and I'm reasonable, just have a chat with me.
Any questions or queries - please ask!!
