So an actual update. Not had 5 minutes last few days although I did get a bit done at work. I've also had my first actual break down
that's what happens when I open my mouth about how impressive it was working as a car haha
So first thing first. Needed to tidy up the edges round the bonnet where I'd chopped the inside out.. on the the bits that I'd cut flush with bonnet they just got some black paint and a wipe of Tiger seal, the raised bits I've had to keep got some black paint and some of that rubber edging trim I used on the arches.. it's not "perfect" but it wil do job
Then had a delivery turn up of more random parts.. I'd moved battery to boot but it was only ratchet strapped down temporarily. Enter 17 quid leisure battery box from eBay..
Obviously I wouldn't just trust the battery sat in it.. so the box is nut and bolted through the floor with spreader plates, and the battery is secured to the floor so it can't shift.
Next job, get my made on the moon oil in.. as it's been said it wasnt cheap but should help with high temperatures, and as I said before, It's made the already quiet engine quieter so I'd call that a win..
Whilst I'd got the bonnet off decided to stick the fresh set of plugs in.. I'd left the old ones in whilst I got it running just incase any muck made its way through save damaging a plug.. stripped all the coil packs off and the inlet pipes and however much stuff is in the way, came to undo the first plug and it was hand tight
figured it was a bit odd, wound it out stuck a new one in and moved onto next one only for that to be hand tight too
As it was all 8 didn't need the ratchet to undo them. What's going on here haha.. well the numpty that did the compression check on the new engine remembered taking compression tester out and winding the plugs back in by hand so no muck went down plug holes... He just doesn't remember ever tightening them Up
and just for reference... I am that numpty haha.
I did have one more thing left to fit.. the thing that caused so much controversy, the bit that would make or break the project.. more important than the bodykit or turbo size or wheel spec....
Now it does look much better.. its been trimmed a bit but still legal size. It's also got a few little tiny creases in it like I said I would haha. But looks good from 10ft.. so it will do for now haha
So a bit of background on the "issue" I had.. I'd noticed a bit of anti freeze coloured staining on top of rad.. I'd ran it up to temperature until the fan came on and it all looked ok. But wasn't sure if the rad cap was steaming slightly or if it was what had spilt.. was chatting to the guy who stripped the v8T drag car and he said he could never get the japspeed rad to seal properly and ended up welding the filler up and fitting an expansion tank with a pressure cap.
Figured I'd try a stock is200 cap but they don't fit. So did the slightly rough trick of putting an oring under the rad cap to put more pressure on the seal (this may come back to bite me later on).. ran it up again and there appeared to be no steam. Fixed? Maybe...
Left work Friday and nipped to chesterfield for someone to price me for a nice stainless exhaust. The one that's on really isn't up to the standard of the rest of the car. And it kinda deserves a nice one (I'm still waiting for said price, it must be expensive haha). On the way home I got stuck in traffic for basically an hour of stop start. Rush hour on a Friday isn't the place to be in this..
Although the clutch isn't "heavy" after an hour it becomes hard work. And when the car is fully fully hot it doesn't like to idle/crawl (John can sort this next time it's mapped).. although I wasnt overheating it was definitely getting warm . Warmer than I'd really like.
Traffic cleared on a bit of dual carriageway near home and I noticed an old school mate in inside lane in his camper van taking his kids away for weekend.. being the child I am came up along side him, gave it a bit of a bounce on limiter, then booted it away from him
and as it loaded up built boost and went into warp drive. There was the biggest explosion of steam and hot water out of 3 sides of the bonnet up the windscreen and EVERYWHERE!! Momentarily blind I realised I'd not connected the washer jets back up FFS.. (I'm told it looked really dramatic from behind haha)
Knocked it out of gear coasted to next roundabout and switched it off luckily my mate figured I may be in trouble and followed me off.. opened the bonnet to be greeted with a disgusting mess everywhere and the top hose blown in 2. Luckily on the joint that I'd had to do to make the top hose work.
Grabbed some tools out the boot (came prepared) and began to wonder if the oring I'd fitted had stopped the cap openeing Hence the pressure built up and summat had to give..
Now the only problem I had was the lack of water. I'd got a couple litre in car but not enough to fill it up.. my mate asked if I was alright and could he get off on his camping trip. Told him I would be if I got some water... He then proceeded to spin his van round, connect his outside shower (he's one of them outdoor types that like wild camping and wears sportswear for actual sport haha) and filled the rad from his shower
sorry in advance to his kids who couldnt get a shower on there trip this weekend haha
Managed to limp it home conscious I hadn't bled the system properly. And parked it up..
Once I'd got kids down Friday night decided to go and make sure it was all bled up properly. And remove said oring. If I can't get it to hold pressure properly. Il get the filler welded up and fit an expansion bottle with a proper rad cap.
Used it a bit yesterday and it's getting called into action again today. But seems happy so far.
As far as disasters go could have been a lot worse. But wasn't a brilliant end to a Friday..
Cheers!
