So finally an update. Almost worthy of being called an update. I know I know. It's still not finished, but we've made some progress.. I've chopped bits off made some bits and bought a new car.. if your bored and want a read carry on.. if your in a rush skip to the end for more V8 noises...
So last time I was here, I was parting with vast sums of money to fix a hateful vw Tiguan. Well.... That went tits up. Got it back, still had a misfire (the general consensus was the flywheel was making it run rough from being out of balance)... Every man and his dog had it plugged in. Tested this that and other. Still "nothing".. deciding to go down the old school way I started unplugging injectors 1 by 1... 1,2 and 4 made the engine run worse.. injector 3 made no difference! Bingo I've found it... Have I? Priced a new injector up, 497 quid each from euros managed to find new ones at 185 each plus vat but still .. luckily I'm mates with a breaker. So he lent me an injector on the promise of me paying for it if it fixed it. Fitted the new injector, got it coded in. No difference... Got another new used injector (on the off chance of it being a faulty one he gave me) still no better.. ffs
Il not carry on waffling, but basically the general consensus was it had lost compression on cylinder 3.. couldn't test as the glowplug had become one with the head... Then the top half broke off the body and that was the final straw. I either needed to take the head off (then new head gasket, studs, timing belt and a skim) plus any damage I found.. or a second hand engine with no guarantees... Decided on option 3 and got rid of it... Sick of it. I've called in every favour I've got on this, what with injectors, coding, plugging it in here there and everywere. Local supercar place even had it for day. I will never buy a "mid price" diesel again.. new enough to be under warranty, yeah fair enough... Or old enough to put in bin when it breaks, but never ever I'm the wierd 5k ish bracket where there not worth spending thousands yet worth too much to scrap. Hateful modern rubbish!!
So needed a car to replace it with. Cheap as I'd basically gotten breaker money for the car. And sharpish as Mrs goes back to work from maternity leave at her new job in the hospital next week.. stumbled across mazda 5's, big enough for 2 kids and all the trimmings, ford petrol engine, no silly injectors or dpfs or wibblepoo like that. Just an engine. Not brilliant on fuel. But petrol is cheaper than the fuel of Satan. And I can fix em.. oh and they have slidy doors. Which makes loading sprogs many many times easier.
Bif of a search and found this. 2ltr petrol, all the trimmings inside, slidy doors, 82k miles and less than cost of injectors for a Tiguan!! That will do.. needs a couple of bits but all easily sorted.. plus as far as hateful buses go I don't think it looks bad. And it drives infinitely nicer than the old pretend 4x4 did
So boring daily waffle complete. Onto the lexarse. Can't remember where I was up to. But here's where I am now (I've not done loads as any spare time has been spent attempting to fix the hateful German rubbish)..
Finally got the turbo fitted for good. My new bolts came with hex heads.. there isn't room for hex heads they foul the turbo. So new new allen bolts were ordered.. turbo fitted permenneant along with the oil feed line and a mocked up return.. I need a length of rubber hose 19mm id with a 90 degree bend at one end.. but to test it this hose will do. Need to find some suitable hose with a bend in??
With that peremenantly fitted I could start on the exhaust. I couldn't do neet pie cuts with the 4 inch pipe I'd got. So bit the bullet and got 2 90 degree bends and a nice new length of tube. Fired up the sparkly stick and came up with this. I'm happy with how it's all turned out and works as I'd expect...
That will do donkey! That will do! My welding is definitely getting better.
So now I've got summat I'm happy with. And trimmed the bumper to clear it (still need to nip a couple inch off the end)
All that's left to do is finalise my wideband position. Then wrap it to try and keep temp down.. I also need to put a support on the end under wheel arch to take the weight a bit.
Now I need to sort cooling. Radiator won't fit in standard position. Contemplating my options looked at aftermarket stuff even looked at custom stuff. Cost starts getting silly tho. And I'm tight. Figured best bet was make the standard size rad fit. Then I can replace it with a cheap Chinese ally one that fits the standard position..
Only way I could make it work was to drop the front crossmember down and move it forwards. As seen in this artists impression
Ten minutes with the grinder and we've lost all the front end.
Now with the crossmember flipped and lowered the standard rad fits back in. Just need to reweld the crossmember in place
So since it had behaved. I thought It deserved a wash, it's not been cleaned since my mate did it last year. I was under strict instructions not to use my usual mucky sponge so ordered a couple cheap wash mits. Just for this job.. wasn't exactly a thorough clean but wasn't exactly filthy since it's not moved since then.. still looks good and paint still feels like glass.
Now at the start of this essay. I promised V8 noises.. well what's better than V8 noises.. V8 turbo ones haha. Obviously as I'm a child and couldn't wait, I've had to try it with the turbo on. I've still got vac lines off, still got no inlet piping on. Still no cooling system... But v8T
So that's that then haha. Need to grab some steel from welders when I next go for work, and need to add a bracket to support the loud pipe. But we're getting there slowly. I've a few little jobs to do on the daily (new backbox and sort the AC out). But that won't take long. So fingers crossed for some more regular progress
Cheers
