Selling my 1985 Bentley Eight.
I have way too many cars (15 at the last count) and I need to offload a few, imminently. I need the space and I need the funds for my other cars now (my '97 Jaguar XK8 and '95 X300 4.0 Sovereign will also be posted here the next couple of days).
6.75 litres of Crewe's finest V8.
MOT until August 23rd 2019. 190k Miles.
Let's be clear - this is by far the cheapest, running (with MOT) Bentley Eight for sale in the UK, or even Europe, in fact. It's ok mechanically, but needs TLC cosmetically and possibly a few little bits to get through the next MOT (mainly the windscreen wipers which are stiff). It's not a garage queen or a show winner. With the high miles, it's a well-used example.
Starts up fine with a gentle prod to the throttle. Does not overheat. I did over 300 miles in it over the weekend, and it was fine, even in the extreme heat. Oil pressure is as it should be.
No knocks, no bangs. The hydraulics all seem fine, all lights correctly extinguish once the car is running. The suspension and brakes are all good, with no sagging on the suspension and no shuddering with the brakes. Even the tyres have decent tread and are matching Goodyears.
Super smooth drive, it really does waft like a magic carpet. Every petro lhead / retro car fan should own and experience one in their lifetime. This is a very powerful car, and although it's not about winning traffic light races or bragging about horse power, it pulls its weight along nicely (it is almost a 7 litre engine at the end of the day!).
Turns so many heads. From young children all the way up to OAPs - they all stop and stare, everyone lets you out at junctions, no one gives you any grief when you pilot one of these!
It has dents, marks and scrapes on most panels. Near side has a scrape along most of it. Boot lid has a dent. NSF wing has a ding. Rust bubbles here and there, but it is not a rot box and my old one was a lot worse with corrosion. Current MOT has no advisories for any corrosion, and its done less than 1k miles since the last one. Still cleans up ok and looks nice from a distance.
Interior is ok, but needs a deep clean and leather feed to improve it. Front seats have cracks in the leather. Driver's door card is worn. Walnut cappings are in good order. Deep pile sheep skin carpets are also in good condition.
Pretty much everything works as it should, apart from the windscreen wipers / washers which appear to have seized up.
Air Conditioning works and is nice and cold - handy in this recent hot weather.
You really do appreciate the sheer quality of the work that went into these. Just feeling the ash trays, cigarette lighters, door mechanisms shows the excellent level of workmanship, and the fact it still rides along and runs smoothly, helps justify it's £100k-when-new price tag!
If you want a mint one, then go and pay over £15k for it. If you want to experience a Bentley at lemonade money and feel like royalty, then this is the one for you.
It will most likely break for more than I am asking - just take a look at how much the walnut cappings, fixtures, fittings, deep pile carpets, etc. can sell for online.
It comes with a bunch of keys and the V5 Logbook.
