When the Mini was at the prototype stage, they reduced the engine size from 948cc to 848cc because the engineers felt the prototypes were too fast for the general public. Apparently they easily did over 90mph, which considering that most small cars struggled to make 70 at the time was probably a good idea, given that nobody really knew what the 10-inch tyres would do at speed.
Also, the prototypes were known as "orange boxes" because they were painted bright orange...

When Issigonis went to Dunlop to get the wheels made, he knew he wanted 10 inch wheels but opened with 8 inch so they would haggle with him back to 10! π

Also the 1.6 Diesel engines used in modern Volvo/Ford are also used in most Peugeot/Citroen models, Mazdaβs, Miniβs, 1-series plus some more I canβt remember. A lot of other manufacturers engines are Peugeot/Citroen units. Think my favourite crossover at the minute is the Hyundai I30R engine which is basically everything from a Evo 11 apart from the block.

Pininfarina penβd this as an Austin 1100 replacement, BMC turned it down and it became the Citroen CX/GS!

Citroen are a baffling company. Birotor GS and M35 which was an Ami coupe IIRC. Citroen were a truly brilliant outfit pre Peugeotβs ownership. The BX wasnβt bad, despite sharing a platform with the 405, for me, the end was when they stopped making hydropneumatic C5βs.

DeLorean = 1st Unleaded? .... Where does every JapCrap imported into Europe figure in the 2* stakes. Might I assume JapCrap=Unleaded??? Yes I understand your thoughts, perhaps what I should have said was, designed to run on unleaded. Cars that ran on 2 star by default ran on unleaded but they had not been engineered to do so.

Mondeo and V70 (both 2007 on), V60 and S-Max share the same platform. The Mondeo platform through the years has a fair bit to answer for. I can add the X-type Jag, and bringing 2 of them together created the platform for the early Galaxy/Sharan/Alhambra. Gonna have to look more into that Focus platform/4x4 thing though! All the very best, Geoff.

Yes, I was just being ironic. Well I never knew that πππ Technically, Fibre-glass with a thin brushed Stainless skin, like a 70s Bang & Olufsen stereo

That is the reason that the stage 1 remap giving around 270bhp was so easy and cheap to do.....allegedly.

The Ford Escort RS1600i was a group A homologated car which had a few distinctive features.
Lower seat base to allow more head room for a crash helmet.
Adjustable front anti-roll bar with aluminium mounts.
Twin coil ignition.
Exhaust system runs over the top of the left rear suspension arm instead of underneath.
Dash shift light
Lower mounted brake master cylinder and servo to allow clearance for the inlet manifold and throttlebody.
Koni shock absorbers.
Solid lifters and Ford Mororsport rocker cover.
Four branch exhaust manifold.
Great car but unfortunately for me it was the βone that got awayβ in all my years of dabbling in old Escorts and prices are too high now. Oh well maybe one day.

^^^^ Didn't a lot of them get written off because of a rear anti-roll bar issue, or lack thereof, allegedly?

All this talk about who designed the Citroen BX,
Which lists Gandini as the designer.
