Where are people buying/renting their welding gas from?
I've been using BOC because I like Argoshield, but their prices keep creeping up and there must be better deals out there. I use very little, so I'm probably paying much more for rental than gas. Just curious what deals people are getting at the moment.

I have 2 my local SAS auto parts do the SGS bottles and i also have a hobbyweld bottle but the shops for them keep coming and going. So I keep the SGS for the mig and Hobbyweld for the Tig

I also use SGS from my local motorfactor, have used Argoshield and argoshield light in the past but not my own bottles, nor am I a good or regular enough welder to tell the difference, I can tell the difference between a cheap poorly setup welder and my mates ones though

oh yeah, the way SGS work is you pay a deposit for the bottle and then pay for the gas, when you run out you just pay for the gas.

I use hobby weld for my mig, and their pure Argon for my Tig based purely on the fact as one of their distributors is the most convenient and open Saturdays when it's most likely to run out.

hmm, i use C02, and i cant see any problems with it so far! for my example, Boss gasses in Preston charge me £50 for bottle deposit and £15 per refill..
For car body work, i really rate it.

How do you rate the 'pro fuel' acetylene replacement? I'm going to have to go that way soon as my inherited ex BOC bottles are nearly all spent.

How do you rate the 'pro fuel' acetylene replacement? I'm going to have to go that way soon as my inherited ex BOC bottles are nearly all spent. It burns at a lower temp of circa 2900 - 2950c whereas acetylene burns at circa 3100c - on a standard welding torch I found it very difficult to set the flame always having to set a higher oxygen pressure to set the optimum flame but then the oxy pressure would then kill the flame and you were back to square one - at first I thought my regulators were playing up but then heard that SGS recommend a set of welding nozzles that they supply for the pro fuel - since purchasing a set of these I have not had an issue at all with the gas or setting the torch - does everything that the BOC acetylene used to - I think that BOC are on a mission to rid themselves from all business from the low volume user with the cost of renting the bottles of any size along with the cost of the gas now makes it completely unviable to use them - the SGS nozzles are listed on their website but have to order through a SGS dealer / supplier but there not overly expensive

I'll be doing that when I finish the bottle of BOC argoshield as they have closed down my local BOC depot

Hobbyweld -I'm on my second bottle of Hobbyweld 5 and it's been drama free - mainly because there are two Mark1 Hire places reasonably near. £100 initially of which about £60 is the one off bottle hire and £40 is the gas. Then you change over the bottle for a new one at £40 a time.
They've said they'll never come looking for the hired bottle so I guess it's some legal thing.
