1971 Saab 99 with 1987 B202L (16VT Bosch & Garret TB03)
Engine correctly registered on V5 in my name at my address.
Short Story.
I built a 1981’99 with this 16VT around 12 years ago to the Blue book. The shell got damaged and then by chance found this 1971 car / rolling shell. All the relevant parts were stripped from one to another.
The story told to me was the 1971 had a crash in the early eighties and the owner found an engine / fire damaged shell so he put all of the 1971 parts into an early 1980’s shell. I do not know the legalities of this and it has never bothered me as the story makes sense and it was not pretending to be anything special still logged as a “GL” and this was long before the “Free Tax” scenario and doesn't fit in any way with a ringing operation.
As for the current legalities the shell has a vin number which marks it as a 1971 which it was not born as but has lived as for the last 30 + years.
The engine has been declared as swapped and does not affect any points awarded for DVLA originality. Any other changes do not affect points awarded for originality.
It’s a dirty old dog, live with it as is, for a giggle or strip, clean and restore to a serious bit of kit. Has had a Pre-MOT check which it passed (engine smoking was mentioned).
Engine
16V Turbo (B202L) from a 1987-year F reg Saab C900 16VT. Around 120K Miles, has had new valve stem seals, It could be run for a bit but would benefit from a full rebuild. It is tired and smoking.
Has custom mounts and modifications which could be swapped to any B202L to fit a 99.
The turbo was replaced around 2000 miles ago with a water cooled genuine Garret TB03.
Running bigger injectors, APC modified as per 900Aero.com.
Has a 5th injector set for what and Boost not currently used.
Has EGT and Lambda in place, not being used. Custom 2L swirl pot with Red top lift pump and 959 Main pump both relayed with quick fill switches Large FMIC and bigger Mocal 11 row Oil cooler.
90% of the Water hoses replaced with new silicone ones.
Exhaust needs rejigging as rubs on hard corners.
Brakes
Front - Brembo 4 pot radial mount on a custom bracket currently running Merc CLK 312mm / 28mm discs.
Rear - C900 rear hand breaks on custom mounts with Hyundai 280mm solid discs.
All lines are coated SS braided Aeroquip.
Master cylinder is the original but under heavy breaking you can feel the fronts before you can lock them up and the rears don’t break away, so I left it as is. It was stripped and rebuilt before its lay up.
Interior
All original fittings except the dash have been removed. The rear has been firewalled by aluminium sheet pop riveted and then heat resistant tape sealed ( needs redoing but I have the tape). The doors and rear quarters have been panelled as well.
OMP Eco Seats with SPARCO 3-point harnesses. Both are out of date. The seat material has gone and needs to be replaced. The subframes are OK but I made them in a hurry and never got around to replacing them.
OMP Passenger foot rest with air horn button
4 Point half cage as supplied by JamSaab.
If you have read this far mention the word Toboggan and I will give you £100 discount or a lollypop (not one of the good ones though).
Extra gauges Inc Oil Pa, Oil Temp, Water temp, Fuel Pa, Volts, Boost and EGT (Greedy units)
5l plumbed (2 engine bay and 1 interior nozzle) fire extinguisher, internal and external push button trigger and 2 L hand held.
Terratrip intercom fitted with 2 headphone sets.
Fuel and Brake lines are run internally with no breaks / joins in the cabin area.
Exterior
Looks like C$$p but is solid minor surface rust no rot. Has had various repairs and let ins. Bonnet is near perfect but later generation with badge.
The Doors are from a 900, solid with some surface rust but they have been gutted.
Silver on V5, grubby dirty mehh in real life.
Side windows are Perspex and I may find the rear I made years ago and then never fitted.
Running Gear
The front hub carriers are 900 but the hubs are 99
Rear beam is from a 900 with ARB. The Hubs are 99 on custom spacers. The Beam has been bent (~5 deg ?? from memory). Shocks are 12-point adjustable AVO units. BUY IT, your neighbours probably hate you anyways.
Wheels are Compomotive TH2 16 * 5.5J, 4 *114, ET35. These are inserted gravel wheels straight and true these dump heat amazingly and keep everything cool.
Tyres are nearly new matching set of NS2 195 55 16 ~ 8mm on all 4. (Try them before you slate them you may be surprised).
Electrics
Custom half loom for the ECU and APC (both located in passenger footwell)
Converted to Blade type fuses. Battery relocated to the rear, Front and rear Anderson connectors for jumping. Internal Twist Key isolator with external pull.
Headlights are BMW dipped and Hella Mains. Air horns !!!!
Spares
Aluminium radiator
Adjustable spring platforms for front and rear just needs springs (2 ½”)
Multiple ECU’s and 1 APC
Front ARB with all mounts
Lots of other random tat
