Factory fitted options: Opening quarter lights, padded dash. Westfalia accessories: Versatile accessory seat, tailgate Mosquito net.
EXTERIOR
This Type 2 Westfalia Campmobile is simply incredible with just 13,477 miles covered and displays a breath-taking originality only seldom found. Type 2 vehicles built for a specific purpose, including Westfalia Campmobiles, have a 'Sonderlackierung', a special paint colour identified on the ‘M-Plate’ affixed behind the driver’s seat on the rear wall. This example is finished in factory Pearl White, (Code 523907), and looks simply wonderful. Only very minimal remedial paintwork has been carried out, by request of the fanatical owner and strictly done sympathetically in order to uphold this Camper’s extraordinary originality. Light scratches around the fuel filler door and some tiny dings are visible but only upon close inspection. Structurally perfect, never welded and with absolutely no rust, all panels display the correct linear faint ripples down each side in line with the original factory welds, leaving in no doubt the claim that this vehicle is unrestored. All doors shut perfectly against the factory rubbers that have never been removed. Beautifully preserved, a true one off.
INTERIOR
One for the collector, this full Westfalia factory conversion has remained almost completely unaltered from new. The amazing originality of this vehicle even extends to the dealer optional mosquito net present and undamaged and factory wax applied to metal surfaces underneath trim. All the fragile catches and rubber door stays have remained intact, as have the Birch plywood wall and ceiling panels and woodgrained and mar resistant furniture components, all factory original. The table surfaces and interior trim are finished in factory fresh Oyster White and completes the hugely clever interior design of this classic Campmobile. The Gold Vinyl rear seat upholstery and flooring are factory, and the leatherette trimmed front seats are immaculate with the ultra-rare and highly sought after versatile accessory seat trimmed in matching material. The second long term keeper washed the original curtains causing them to disintegrate, however the previous owners resourceful wife managed to trace a near perfect pattern match and has had them professionally re-produced. Time warp is a term used freely, but completely justified with this amazing vehicle.
ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
The four-cylinder flat four air cooled engine with a capacity of 1584cc produces 57 bhp and is a mechanical delight. Supreme cleanliness from an unrestored example will gain much awe from onlookers. Reliable usage is a given due to fastidious maintenance using correct grade oils and genuine parts. The fully synchronized 4-speed gearbox performs exactly as it should. Nostalgically wonderful and correct in every way.
WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
Factory 5” steel rims feature correct VW painted hubcaps often replaced in favour of chrome items. Quality matching Dayton Quadra SE tyres of size P195/70 R14 are fitted all-round and amazingly the spare is still the original factory Continental item! The dual hydraulic brake system incorporating dashboard warning light operate exactly as Volkswagen intended.
HISTORY FILE
Quite remarkably, this Campmobile has a history that can be traced all the way back to the factory! Produced on the 27th April 1970 and fitted out by Westfalia, this example left the factory just six days later after it had been fully undersealed. First destination was to the ferry port where it was shipped to a VW dealer in the US State of Pennsylvania and put on display. A resident of Reading, Pennsylvania, by the name of Matthew Mongi saw the bus and decided to buy it as a retirement present. In his 20 plus years of ownership, Mr Mongi used the bus for fishing trips and annual holidays, and it spent all other times in his garage when not in use. In the early 1990’s and due to advancing years, Mr Mongi sold the vehicle to second owners, Les and Cherilee Keeper of New Jersey, at which point it had covered just 7,000 miles. Mr and Mrs Keeper certainly took on the mantel of devoted ownership, using the bus for folk music festivals and garaged away from the elements when not in use. It was in 2009 when the mileage was just 11,808 miles that dedicated VW collector, Mr Paul Willcock, travelled to the US to view the vehicle from his home in Reading, England coincidently! Having regretted the sale of his previous bus, an eight year search ensued before Mr Willcock discovered this example, and both the journey and wait were more than worth it. Having arrived in the UK in 2009 and fully registered with the DVLA, the bus has attended numerous high-profile Volkswagen meetings and shows where coveted awards have been won along with successful competing within the Stanford Hall Classic Concours D’Elegance.
A comprehensive box of vehicle history make for wonderful perusal and includes many fascinating photographs, original sales brochure, trophies gained and magazine features as well as all handbooks, Westfalia guide and even the very rare VW diagnostic coupon booklet! Without question one of the best Type 2 example in existence and seldomly available to the open market. Buy it while you can.
