Don't see why this wouldn't be possible if you used a balance bar like these and mount it on a rsj across the load bearing walls. The winch can hold 4000lbs which is about 2 ton. Anyone else done this?

Sounds like a very expensive engine crane, why do you want to do it that way?

I've used a half ton hand winch as an engine crane. Rope or chain around a conveniently placed beam, another rope fashioned into a sling around the engine, connect the two with your winch and you're racing.

in "the good old days" an endless chain winch slung off a beam or mobile gantry was the way of doing it anyway....time and the availability of hoists wont have changed that at all. if you have a decent floor surface a hoist is the way to go really though for ease and manouverability unless you have a slding dolly for the winch.

Sounds like a very expensive engine crane, why do you want to do it that way? I once bought an engine crane - It was huge, difficult to store, legs too big to fit under car so had to take wheels off, (crane not car!) Gave the bloody thing away after discovering a family of mice living in one of the legs. Years ago bought a subaru legacy that had a brand new winch with it, unused. Far smaller and easier to deal with - comes with a wired remote. I have a gearbox to replace on the 900 and this seems ideal for the task.....

I once helped remove an engine and gearbox from a Mini in a farm building. This had a huge winch in the rafters and it was FAR easier than using an engine hoist. Lovely thing to use. As long as said rafter is strong enough there should be no issues.

If you have a rsj in the ceiling then just buy a block and tackle hoist . You can buy a manual one for £50 and a electric one for £70.
Of course you need enough room to move teh car out of the way as well

I could be wrong but aren't recovery winches (I assume that's what you have since it came with a car?) not designed for lifting? You can get specific winches for lifting stuff. Sounds to me like the best way is block and tackle off the rsj

£50 buys an electric hoist off eBay that will do 200kg.
A winch rated at 4000lbs is for horizontal pull only, I wouldn't want to rely on one holding that weight in a vertical lift

If your just going to lift a gearbox then fine, but as the others have said a winch designed for pulling a ton horizontally will not take kindly to a ton deadlift. Not that I use it as I have a forklift now, but I paid £140 for a new engine crane from sgs years ago. Folds away neatly, wheels are small to go under most things, a good investment

Many years ago I had to change a broken engine in a Kadett D. Not being very well equipped I lent a 2.5t winch from a mate. I fastened these to the iron beam supporting the garage with a few seatbelts I cut out some wrecks. Managed to change the engine without any problem. Mind you, I was able to lower the engine in a grease pit. Wouldn't suggest that method though But if fastened correctly I can't see to many problems with lifting a 2-300kg engine block with a 2.5t winch, even if it's not designed to deadlift 2.5t, surely it must be capable of lifting 1/10th of that? Perhaps there is some technical info about the winch that could specify this?

Didn't consider the horizontal/vertical lift aspect - will definitely research this

Of course you need enough room to move teh car out of the way as well Not necessarily - I use a chain hoist on girder trolley on RSJ to remove engine & 'box but lift the front of the car and leave engine/box behind. I rustled up a quick angle iron frame on castors that bolts under the engine/box so you just wheel it out whilst the front of the car is in the air.

I think 60six you are local-ish to me. Do you know Martin with the green rover? I have an engine crane you can borrow if that’s any assistance?
