LET THE GAMES BEGIN...
So I'll admit I've wanted one of these ever since picking up a copy of Volksworld in WHSmith when I was about 8, I knew what a beetle was and I thought they were cool but not as cool as what was in the pages, that day started an addiction that hasn't gone away and ended up with me settling on a 73' 1303s as my dream beetle, but coming into the world of classics from starting my modified car life with a saxo, mega low passat and a fabia is going to be a challenge, at present I have ZERO knowledge of old cars or beetles, so this thread will be my place to share what I learn THE CAR:
What I bought on Saturday was a lovely relatively rust free 73 bug which was originally yellow, now very slap dash black and white with a well running 1600cc engine in the back, well it was well running... beetle 2 by TheKoolBox, on Flickr THE ADVENTURE:
Naturally not having ever owned a classic car before I knew they weren't always reliable... so what I decided to do was drive it home the 200 miles home because blind faith and enthusiasm is what powers the best things... Shortly after Exeter we had some issues which I have no idea what sound it was but it went away after an oil top up in Plymouth, however being nearly midnight the thickest oil I could get my hands on was 10w40 so a complete oil change is needed asap... and BTW if anyone saw the smokescreen bellowing around the barbican its all good, the oil got way more viscous than I thought so the car started burning it at an alarming rate, it seemed to settle at 3/4 full though... carburettor now needs a clean but hopefully the engine seals are still intact Next on the list of problems was the clutch going, the hills around Truro were fun with that problem, so that's been added to the list... oh and just because the car thought it was REALLY unfair of me to drive it all the way it also decided to become a 2 stroke flat 2 at the same time, after spending all day today troubleshooting I'm hoping fresh spark plugs and HT leads will sort that, if not then the worry turns to end float and many other horrible things, it does just sound like the misfire is shaking the engine about though! Well at about 0145 this morning I pulled up, frozen half to death and with a misbehaving bug, but that's half of the dream complete, IVE GOT A BEETLE!!! THE PLAN:
SO, what am I gonna do with it... firstly its going in a garage out of the wet and wind where I'll start stripping it down, then over the next few months I'm going to be garage painting it, then engine rebuild, then a complete re wiring! Body: Imola yellow with black racing stripes, colour coded bumpers and new head/tail lights. Interior: bucket seats, rear bench removal, Half Rollcage, brown leather trim and some modern goodies for the dash and a centre console build. Engine: rebuild, new clutch, short shift gear stick, new exhast, and if I can afford a race cam and throttle bodies them too. Suspension: either air ride on a narrowed beam and IRS conversion with wider wheels or new shocks and springs to lower some more. So hopefully that gives you an idea of where I'm starting from, and what my plans are! A manual and spark plugs are on their way as I type so let the fun begin

Can only see one photo,
But if it’s a 1303 it will have struts at the front and IRS, but that should make it easier to install bags, possibly
1303 had a plastic dash and curved windscreen
Anyway, looking forward to updates

It is a 1303 James is getting confused lol. It's currently got blue lowering springs up front and the rear irs is standard height for now

I’d quite like a 1302, which is similar but has a metal dash If it’s leaking oil and the clutch has gone it may be leaking at the flywheel oil seal, it’s an engine out job... but that is only 4 or 5 bolts Definately need more photos

From someone whos had quite a few aircooled vws.
Only use the right oil, keep it clean, and keep it full.
They have no filter, they run rich as curse word when cold so the oil gets bad quickly, and the oil is an integral part in cooling.
A sure way of killing one is messing with the oiling or not being on the ball with it.
Also being 1303 its strut front so no narrowed beam ideas, but coilovers are possible. Irs rear so will go low with not too much negative camber like a swingarm bug.
Superbugs definatly handle better than a normal beam axle bug, but they get floaty at high speeds. Say in excess of 70

Beetle build? I'm in! I've had somewhere in the region of 15 Beetles but never a 1303 (well, I had a 1303 floorpan once, just not the shell for it...)
1303's respond well to German Look tricks so there is a lot of info out there if you want it. From your description of what you want I'd go for drums and discs redrilled to Porsche pattern then bolt up a set of 17's - I like the twists off a 911, but BBS style lattice spokes are available. Modern version of the factory Yellow and Black Racer special edition! As the others have already said you're already on IRS on the back and struts on the front. I'm pretty sure that you can get slimline lowered struts for the front, and the back is just adjustment on the torsion bars - I'd get the wheels and tyres sorted first and build it around that. Lots of Porsche bits fit the back end too.
Not sure where you are in Cornwall, but Matt Keene (ex-Volksworld tech ed) has his wokshop Airkraft in St Agnes.
Welcome to the aicooled side - you'll never leave...

Ooh Arr, Just a little bit! SO, I've managed to completely forget about this whole forum for nearly exactly 7 months anyway thats probably why the ONLY thing that has happened on the bug has been the rear brakes seizing up and taking the bonnet/boot off to check for any rust. However I have a cunning plan... I've been doing some financial forecasting and working out what I will do with my car situation when I return to blighty in November (I wrote off my skoda fabia in june, damned modern thing) and it seems the most sensible idea is to make the Beetle reliable with a few choice upgrades and daily that until I get round to needing the space of the Passat again. No pictures just yet but when I get back from the gym I will do a more detailed update on the to do list that is coming along nicely!

I've had two Fabias, they're great little runarounds. Reliability and Beetles? It can be done, but depends how much you've got to spend. We'll assume the shell and floor pan are sound, and other than the narrowed beam (which you can't really do on an '03, well, not easily!) all your ideas from your original post sound good, especially the throttle bodies and rewiring!

She (the fabia) was quite fun ill admit after a few pints but just not what I really want, two seats is more than enough for me so the passat will be replaced by something more swift later next year too when the insurance starts coming down again! But back to the beetle! You're very right about a beam on an '03, what was I thinking, DOH! I've been learning allot recently doing lots of research into what can and can't be done, and I'm gonna have to go and get another bug if I want to play around with narrowed beams and dropped spindles Now I've sorted myself out with some planning here is the current priority list for winter upgrades: First up is what I'll be doing as soon as I get back to England and moving about the south west again ready to relocate next year which includes: - Full engine service with Spark Plugs, HT Leads, Rotor arm and distributor cap, rocker cover and easily replaceable gaskets - Rear Drum overhaul with new drum face, springs and pads - New 200mm clutch, I'm not going for an upgraded one yet as the engine will be coming out again mid summer for a tune up - Billet SCAT sump plate (because I'm a sucker for shiny things) and magnetic sump plug and washer - SCAT Drag-Fast short shifter, I realise I'll probably need to change some gear selector bushings too potentially to get a crisp gear shift, advice on that would be appreciated if anyone knows the right bits to go for
Next is once I've temporarily relocated my life to my unit going for some extra lows and stopping power: - Front disk conversion: Rear will be coming with engine rebuild, drums do a good enough job and refurbished should be more than capable of stopping the car on a brisk drive - If I can find disk brake dropped spindles for a 1303 then that will be good, I've seen some on VWHeritage that seem to look like the right pattern but don't specify they will work with a 1303 - Adjustable rear spring plates, as well as adjusting the torsion bars this will give me extra adjust ability to set the car up just right - Lowered rear shock absorber, not quite gaz coil over shocks just yet, the budget doesn't quite allow that... - Adjustable front strut housing, just because lows really... do I need an excuse to slam a beetle?
And finally we come to my xmas prezzies to myself which include but are not limited to:
- Eva Resto adjustable rear deck lid hinge, looks cool, helps cool - New 3" lowering springs and lowered front strut inserts (just to be safe as I don't actually know if its already on lowering springs already) - Interior bits like tunnel storage basket and new radio, along with complete new speaker setup - Rear Bench removal and replacement with a luggage rack
Well that's a start, once all that is done I fully intend to enjoy driving what will hopefully be a less temperamental classic around while thinking of seat and exhast solutions and wether I want to go down the retro - race route or not as I'm sure fitting a harness bar can't be too hard and there is a plentiful supply of SPARCO seat rails and some tasty folding buckety seats that 'should' drop in! All in all motivation is well and truly back for the air-cooled love and I have been looking at dangerously tempting engine kits and swaps flying about 'tinterwebs

A MOMENT OF INSPIRATIONIt's happening again... my brain thinks its being clever... knew i should have taken my medication
After a delightful scroll through the 'Poor mans Porsche appreciation thread' which I shall be returning to shortly I saw a gorgeous orange 914 which got me thinking, that's just a properly sporty beetle and after discovering SINGER have done a few (and getting distracted looking at images of the drop dead gorgeous 'Dynamics and Lightweight Study') I thought how hard can it be to fit 914 gauges in a bug? as Ive seen a few people fir big ol 'tuner' tachos but thats not really my jam tbh, so another thing has cropped up on the to do list for sure.
I'm not sure if I want to put a whole 914 dash in place but am fairly certain I can make something presentable work with only minor hacking about of a beetle dash, (mockups will have to be made) and fingers crossed I can add an extra bit of retro detail that makes it easier to hoon the bug about as thats what I fully intend this bug to be, a thoroughbred drivers car, one that moves, tuns, stops and feels like it wants you to push it harder.
another thing is the style of it, I'm fairly certain I want to take the car back to yellow again, but a full respray in probably audi IMOLA YELLOW.... more thoughts to come soon

MORE IDEAS!Having been reading up some more on 914 bits and bobs, I need to do some more research but from what I understand I SHOULD be able to fit 914 disks and calipers to the bug with a little modification, although after reading this article here it seems that BMW 320i calipers are a good upgrade to the 914-4 braking system, I'm yet to read up about the 914-6 braking system but I can imagine a good bang for buck upgrade on the bug will be 914-4 brakes with the BMW front caliper upgrade another thing to consider would be vented disk rotors, and the 914-6 had these, and in the comments on that article above there is mention to 911/other BMW calipers that have been designed for vented rotors so those are another option if I really want to persue the track capable route... Another consideration is the seats, I would like bucket seats and harnesses, not only for the extra body holding through spirited cornering but also an added extra that I don't get thrown out of the seats on a track day, plus who doesnt like feeling like they're in a race car. So naturally I turned to see what Mr Walker has done with his 914.Naturally its adorned in leather and tartan, which is very cool indeed and the retro style bucket seats are top notch too. I helped collect a similar set for a good mates Mk1 106 a few months back which were very comfortable so are a definite potential for the Beetle, and go inline with the Pro-Touring/Restomod theme I love so much. Plus period (or period style) details are never a bad touch in my eyes!
