So got some time on the coupe today, charged the battery enough to start it, fixed a puncture, flushed the coolant and replaced a top hose. I managed to have a good look under the rear of the car and I’m happy with what I saw, the sills all look and feel very solid and the rear of the the car looks equally good. The N/S..... And the O/S, this has had a patch welded onto the end of the sill but still looks very solid. The jacking point looks rough but is solid also. Whilst I had the wheel off I had a quick look under the arch and all seemed well here too, once summer comes I’ll give it a good jet wash underneath and see where I am then. I had chance to have a rummage around and see what I was faced with as a starting point, all dealer plates and rover stickers all over the car still, I also found the locking wheel but package, useless now as it’s had it’s day but a nice piece of history for the car still along with the handbooks etc, I knew the bonnet had laquer peel but not quite this much, it’ll need replacing or painting again at some point, probably replacing due a large dent in it I’m happy with the car on the whole, it’s everything what I was told and wanted in the car really.

Yeah mate, I’m actually pleasantly surprised with the condition of it overall.
The dents just to the left of the right washer nozzle. Quite deep in person.

I always wanted one of thoese but with an Auto box - never seen one for sale so assumed they were all manuals? All versions (1.6 & 2.0) had manual transmission as standard, but Rover did do a 1.6 version with an automatic option.

The wife was out today so I jumped at the opportunity for some car time. It didn’t all go to plan though...... After I replaced my top hose and bled the system I thought I’d got lucky and escaped any HG faults, this was till today when I had the car running while pottering, it starting spitting steam from the joint between the manifold and centre pipe, like a smoke machine. To go with this I was losing coolant somewhere without it dripping out the engine. I removed the plugs for a look even though I was fairly certain I knew the answer... plugs 1&2 were dry and fine but 3&4 looked like this 3 is the wet one and 4 is the one full of oil. Checked the dipstick and that looked like this That confirms my fears I think So I did what anyone would and cleaned the car instead, pulled the boot apart and cleaned the carpets. I’m happy with how it came up after a quick sponge. Only little bits achieved but progress is progress. I’ll pull the engine in summer and rebuild it and pop a new clutch in at the same time. No doubt I’ll find an online guide for the HG. I also found this deep graze on the drivers drop glass, can the glass be polished back at all? It’s all etched with the ref and I’d like to keep it if possible.

The oil on the plug could be a bad rocker cover gasket but that has to come off to do the head gasket.
To be honest the best thing to do is get it out and do a full engine strip and re build then you will have it all right for the summer, yes it's a lot of work but worth it considering what you paid for the whole car and you can do 90% of it your self still worth while.
You could get it ported and gas flowed while it's apart new rings and bearings as the yogurt running through them could of done damage it's the only way to get all of it out of the engine.
You will really have a fun car when it's all done still at an affordable cost.

Ahhh bummer. Still HG isnt too bad to swap. Can upgrade to the later type and steel head dowels for extra future security.

Shame about the HG, but a typical thing of MG/Rover - that's why i got rid of my ZR. But good too see that you're willing to keep at it (unfortunately for me as i want this car but that's a different story )

Wouldn’t worry to much, done loads of HG’s on k-series engines and they really are very easy to do.
Bit of advice though, never turn the crank over with the head off unless you’ve clamped the liners down and only use the newer multilayer HG if the block face is perfectly flat, if the liners are even slightly raised then stick to the elastomer gasket otherwise it won’t be long before you are replacing it again.

From a quick google it appears there’s a gasket that leaks coolant into the chambers on the inlet manifold. I’m now visibly losing coolant into the floor also so I think this gasket has gone.
I’ve no other signs of failed hg apart from cloudy oil which could just be moisture in the oil. Hopefully.......

I think I may have been hasty in my conclusion. From a quick google it appears there’s a gasket that leaks coolant into the chambers on the inlet manifold. No, the inlet manifold gasket leak causes No1 cylinder to misfire for about 30 secs on start-up; you have full mixing which means the elastomer bead has gone on the HG. Drop the oil and coolant, refill both with either cheap or used oil and dilute coolant, run the engine up to temp, change the oil again, run up again and dump that oil. That should purge the curse word out of the system fairly well. Then drop the coolant out. Once the head is off get it looked at by someone who knows what they are doing - I used a guy in Leicester for the last head job and it came back fully overhauled for not a lot. Check the liner protrusion - if thats bad then the engine may have been cooked. There are ways around it but 1.8 K series are all over the interweb and they are all basically the same lump. People are scared of them because they are "Rover K Series" but they aren't bad to work on and well built, with uprated HG, bolts and oil rail, they can last forever and can handle silly BHP. Or you could find a trashed MG6 and chuck the turbo N Series in (same-ish engine)and tweak that for smiles....

Sorry to see the HG issues, but not really unexpected for you I'm sure. There's almost an inevitability about it, a bit like bringing a new puppy home and waiting for the first pi$$-puddle. That said, these K series are actually very under-rated engines solely because of the well documented nature of it's achilles heel. Anyway, well done Sir, great purchase. Love these. Especially in Nightfire Red, which is the best colour for them by a mile. Yep...that's blown the gasket. A bit of a smear on the dipstick is one thing, but sludge like that is only going to come from a proper oil/water mixing incident.
I'd make a point of dropping that and running fresh oil through the engine sooner rather than later. That should at least help avoid issues with rust in bad places or stuff seizing up.

Thanks for the advice, I work away so I’ll not be able to get hands on this again till may now.
Fingers crossed it’ll be ok till I’m back and rip the engine out for a more detailed look.
I fully intend to do the headgasket myself but do know of a mobile guy who seems to be very good at what he does and helped me out a few years ago when he could easily of ripped me off so he’ll get the work if I farm it out.
