So I still use the Astra van for work but felt the need for something else. Essentially Wifey said "can we turn up at a family event without looking like the poor relatives", she has a point as the daily hack was a Y reg Pug 106 that is slowly dying. In my search for something...modern and sensible I came across this Mazda and recalled happy times in one in the 90's. Blah blah blah, phone calls, hand wringing etc and I have this beauty. The car; as per title, 2.5l V6, not much loved or hated in its time but I like it so there. I'm the 4th owner, previous chap had it for a year and covered 400 miles, 2nd owner had it from '99. Been garaged, repaired as needed, has every mot and a full service history. A little aside, the chap who sold it to me replaced the windscreen using his excess, gave it a fresh mot and cleaned and polished it, getting annoyed that it started to drizzle while cleaning as he'd never let it out in the wet. Easiest drive home with new car ever! Oh, and a boot big enough for several corpses...if that's your thing. And I have absolutely nothing to do on it, that's a first.

Absolute beauty
I think these will get “discovered” at some point.
I loved them from day one when they came into the market, but have never wanted to own one.
However, as time goes on, that feeling is changing.
I do remember a V6 with side pipes in Cape Town years ago, sounding very good.
Excellent purchase there.

Yeah, it really does seem like a car no one knows or gives a curse word about but then that seems to be how I roll (see Bedford Astra van, Datsun 120Y...) And all that for under ÂŁ2k

Looking at your photos, and knowing them from up close and in real life, they are much prettier and lower in real life, no need for slamming.

Ditto what Grizz said- these cars will one day be properly desired and there will be curse word all about. Great engine, fantastic handling, comfy seats (we'll ignore that bland 90's Japanese interior because well.. thet were all like that then)
I've been looking at these on Trademe in NZ and not many come up for sale. It does seem that the prices for nice ones are slowly creeping up too.

These really do seem to get better with age, at least to me. That's in lovely condition! Great find!

Exactly that! I had a Probe with the same engine/chassis and while the engine is no doubt still superb, the Probe looks very firmly stuck in it's time (OK, call it dated) whereas the MX-6 still looks great

I think one reason it looks so nice is all the glass. Earlier cars of that era with more visibility. Even the Rx7 fd had a decent amount of glass. Set against modern cars where the glass area is shrinking, for what I can only presume is safety, and these cars just stand out. I spotted an advert in a NZ car mag yesterday for an Aston martin vantage. It was a side profile and boy does it look more like a mini suv/hatch then a sports car. Such small windows too... don't get me started on the absurd window sizing on those new Discoveries!

Lovely motor car! I'm an MX6 owner too, I'm restoring and turbo charging mine (though haven't done any work for about a month).
These are definitely under-rated machines in my opinion: look good, sound good, go pretty well and generally reliable too. One of those cars that doesn't do anything badly but never really had a distinctive character that made them stand out in the crowded '90's coupe market.
Your's looks a very nice example judging on the body condition, better than mine certainly.

Bought from Cornwall??
Was on my radar on the run up to Christmas, but don't think I can make a 2 door work usefully for us and don't want another car here only doing a couple of hundred miles a year like our E39!
Congrats though, it sounded like a great example.

No updates as nothing has happened, except driving. Anyway, I have a water leak that needs investigation. When it rains, the boot gets wet inside, you can see the rusty footprints from the jack in the picture. Everything looks ok, the seal is tight, I don't get it. And now it's getting colder it's starting to smell musty. I guess I could pour water over it and see...

Sold it, leaks and all. Took a drive to Cornwall, left it smelling of pasties. Have a shot from the final drive. It's only gone about 10 miles away to a chap who's had 3 MX6's before.

I owned this car before the gent in Cornwall. Bought in July 1999 as an approved used vehicle from Newport Mazda. Sold in November 2017 because a few issues had built up and I could not find a decent mechanic locally. It was in danger of scrappage and I did not want that, so I put it on eBay in the hope that someone could make it live on. Otherwise I would have hung on to it indefinitely, I liked it so much. If the current owner sees this, please contact me. I have an old remote control that I am not sure works but would like to post on if possible. I may try a V888 request in a while. The picture is one of many taken for the sale. - Ian
