So I bought this Saw it for sale, he wanted more, I offered less, did a firm deal over email, got the train up to meet the seller, picked me up from the station, took him home, paid him, signed paperwork, drove 200 miles or whatever home. Bish bash bosh! It's slow, it's old fashioned, the wind noise has to be heard to be believed, it's not economical, it doesn't ride well, it makes an assortment of noises and I couldn't be happier with it.

I was about to say it's identical to my mum's old one ARE 808Y, but it's a left hooker so it isn't, which is a good job as it got clumped in the side quite hard Looks sweet, love a clean XR3, would love one myself.

Cheers guys
No, no rust on the wing - no rust anywhere really. I have had a good dig around and have found the following: Small area of corrosion on the battery tray Small perforation to the underside of the tailgate (about a 2mm hole) Crusty area about the size of a fiver in the spare wheel well.
Otherwise it looks solid.
Mechanically it's had new dampers and top mount bearings, obviously someone has been trying to cure the front left clonk but not got very far. My money is on the TCA balljoint, so I will replace the TCAs and ARB bushes first and see if that sorts it out. Gearbox whines a bit - it could do with a swap really as in first it's pretty noisy so I'm keeping an eye out for a 'box locally.
I really like the RS1600i splitter, transforms the front end of the car. It's had a variety of spotlamp configurations over it's life as far as I know - so I'm trying to decide if I want to go with the 2 up 2 down setup or leave it as it is.

Absolute stunner! My mum had a silver one in my youth, that ended up a compact after a motorway crash... not the safest in a crunch up these. I remember even back then it was unreliable, rusty but my god did I love it! I would have one in a heartbeat if I could afford it. When I got the Series 1 RS Turbo in Forza Horizon 4 I immediately made it look like an XR3 funnily enough in red! So yours is a car of dreams for me LOVE IT!

Back in the day we all had these. My dad drilled through his thumb nail fitting my 16i spoiler! They look best 2 up and 2 down (IMHO) with the bottom set rectangular fogs. Cracking!
About 13yrs ago I had an S1 RST, to recapture my younger days. My mates were absolutely cracked up about the spindles for the wipers sticking up so high.

I only know a bit about the car
It was imported from France in 2015 - covered in moss and looking very sorry for itself, but apparently in pretty solid condition, which seems to be the case with most of the French ones. It was MOT'd and at some point resprayed - no idea if it had any body work done at the same time, but the back arches are almost perfect inside and out so I imagine it had some work done on the panels. You can see from the interior pic the old faded paint on the doorshuts, so I might get those blown in along with the boot shuts. The paint is really good actually - no runs or blisters that I can see, orange peel that pretty much matches the factory peel these had, no flaking, and whilst the satin black around the windows isn't perfect it isn't bad either. The guy I bought it off fitted the spotlights, the RS1600i splitter, and a few other little bits and bobs.
Sunroof is rust free, and tilts and slides as it's supposed to. Seats are in excellent condition - in fact the whole interior is really good other than the dashboard which is ruined - deep cracks everywhere, and warped so badly that it doesn't even fit in the car properly any more.
I'm alright with LHD - other than occasionally walking out of a shop and getting in to the passenger side, which is a bit embarrassing!

Lovely car, Set of twin 40s, highlift cam and a 4 branch should perk it up a bit...

When I used to rent cars in poland I was forever doing that, I took to opening the boot first and looking at the steering wheel to remind myself!

Even after almost 20 years in Australia I sometimes still look for my steering wheel at the wrong side of the car....
I remember the times that the XR3 was a fast car and was definitely on many young man's wish list. Just before we left Holland I bought a 1982(ish) Escort a 1.6 automatic. I really liked that car. Yours looks really good. Good luck with it

After 6 weeks out of the country I got back yesterday unsure if the old beast would start. It did! Took it for a blast to Aldi, it's amusing how dainty and angular it looks next to modern traffic: Noticed that when it was resprayed they didn't bother with the bumpers which is now annoying me because they don't quite match the new paint - I want to get them done soon. I also need to take off the RS1600i splitter, the rear wheel spats, and the bumper end caps and paint them with black bumper texture paint to even the finish out - the PU rear spoiler can stay as it is. The bumper overriders are all a bit tatty and at around £100 each if you can find used ones I won't be replacing them. The recommendation is to fill and sand them like conventional metal/plastic and paint them with the same texture paint to match the bumper trim and end caps, so that will keep me occupied for a weekend. Took it home and gave it a wipe down with some quick detailer as it was too cold for a proper wash. Wheels are filthy! Then I decided to replace the front TCAs. This isn't a particularly hard job but the various nuts and bolts were all seized solid and took a lot more effort to free off than I'd have liked. Here are the new arms: The old ones weren't totally knackered but definitely worse for wear: The car drives better on the new arms, but still knocks and donks a bit. ARB bushes and top mounts next, but I was out of power and it was starting to rain! I also managed to uncover a bit about the car's history. It was abandoned in France for 12 years and brought back to life in 2013 with no real work other than a clean. No welding, bodywork etc. It was then imported to the UK and sold to a garage who painted it. All the panels, arches, sills etc are completely original, the only welding it's had is a replacement front crossmember at some point in the UK. Next steps: Replace the puny spotlights with correct sized ones (I can't justify the mental cost of Carello 640s so it will get a pair of Hellas) Lower spotlights ARB Bushes Green dashboard lights to replace the horrible blue ones

stunning looker and on the old pepperpots as well loved this shape of escort, I had a Bonus 90 mk4 3 door that I loved but I always wanted a mk3 because of the 'flat front', my wish list garage would contain a few of these, an xr3, an xr3i, a RS1600i and the holy grail a RS1700T
