Recently swapped my mk2 golf for this MX5 Probably not the best deal in the world but I do enjoy an MX5 so hopefully I’ll have some fun. As I collected it complete with BGW and dents It’s fitted with HSD coil overs and BBS copies with silly stretched tyres. It’s very scene but had a good stance although completely impractical for the raids and speed bumps round here. So today I set about rectifying a few things. Firstly it needed a new roof so picked one up for £40 and set about fitting it in the rain obvs. I also swapped out the wheels for some steelies with matching tyres another bargain. This lets me drive over speed bumps at least. Just needs setting up! And I also removed the BGW. Not many photos but here’s how it stands now! With the fake BBS I like the look but it was too low haha Hopefully I’ll get a good alignment soon......

I was undecided on the wing! But it’s not really me. Got loads of little kids saying wow look at that car! Lol.
It’s too loud at the minute. Needs a box adding i think so I can get on it/slide it without creating too much attention lol

Steelies ....... far better . Looks more purposeful ( less is more and all that )
About the kids commenting , for me it’s the watershed, when a teenager compliments my design choices , I know I’ve gone too far . I’m too old and should know better !

Took the ‘5 to get an alignment today at a local place that specialise in mx5’s Great service and all sorted now. Drives so much better can’t wait to get some spigot rings on the wheels and take it for a proper drive!
Will probably be upgrading the wheels and tyres soon I think as the tyres on it don’t have the best reviews. But they are at least a machining set with plenty of tread.
I also got to have a good poke about under the car and it’s solid enough. A lot better than I was expecting. Will need a good wire brush and under seal but nothing too serious to worry about.
No photos unfortunately but very happy at the minute.

Well in the post above I said it was pretty solid underneath....I should have known better 😂. While fitting a new exhaust this weekend I found a nice rather large hole in the inner sill on the passenger side 🤨. So that’s something to add to the list pre MOT. Anyway on to more interesting things. The new exhaust! The previous one was a massive fart cannon, far too raspy but looked good! It also had a couple of pin holes in the joints so was blowing a bit! I decided to go for the Cobalt single exit from Moss and I couldn’t be happier. Nice tone and not too loud. Almost sensible. New and old for comparison I also fitted a G19 063 battery conversion kit so the battery is held securely in place now and not flopping about in the boot. Also better than a bungee cord 😂 Next I loved on to the interior. I got a Jass performance stereo and gauge holder from my folks for Christmas, so I fitted that along with a better stereo I had laying around and a few cheapo gauges I’ve had for ages but never used. I got the lights all wired up but only managed to sort out the voltage gauge as that is really simple From this Via this To this The next things on the list are to fit the new wheels, shown here fitted temporarily to get an idea. But I need to raise the back up a little and fit a couple of new tyres. As the drivers side is a bit lower and with the offset and dish it would rub loads. So I have bought some C Spanners and will sort this out when they arrive. I have also bought a loom to connect up the heated rear window. I need to fix the drivers door card to tidy up the interior. Just needs sticking back together. So copious amounts of duct tape should sort that out. I’ve ordered a new shift boot gaiter and while I’m at it I’ll check and top up the gear box oil and turret oil. I need to sort something out with the boot lid as there are holes left over from the BGW. But I like the duck tail and don’t want to splash out in a new one for a new boot 🤨 but I don’t think the blue electrical tape is good enough, I may need to switch to black haha. Then it’s on to the rust 😳

I really like this. My brother has a Mk2 MX5 but I've actually never been in it!! Took one for a test drive many moons ago for a giggle - LOVED it!
Love the way that you have "de-scened" this one. It looks far better in my eyes. I particularly like the use of the phrase "fart cannon". Great work - Bookmarked!

An interesting swap from a Mk2 Golf, but I do like an MX-5.
Ah, I'm glad you didn't get the twin exit exhaust. My MX-5 Parts item was laughably loud on my 1990 example.

Yeah I did want to go twins as I don’t particularly like the look, it’s not a V engine after all! And I’ve heard they are very loud, this is perfect. I have a stupidly loud exhaust on my mr2 so this is far more acceptable. Yeah swapping from a mk2 golf is defo an interesting one, especially with one rear wheel drive J car in the stable already. But the golf was a 5 door not the 3 I’d wanted and while a good car, it was just too sterile! Mx5’s are just so much fun 😀

Well I hope this clears up Managed to talk the wife into letting me have a car day tomorrow to sort the welding on the floor. But I’m not like the conditions lol.

Well not rain but freezing temperatures and over chores that weren’t originally on the list plus the usual ferrying wife and kids about meant it was about 1pm before I actually got any time on the MX5! Too cold and grumpy to start on prepping for welding and because I want to use the car for the next week to get some miles on it. I decided to try and sort a few little issues instead of the welding lol. First up was wiring in the heated rear window. Didn’t get massively far with this. But the light on the dash now turns on. Can’t see and heating or defrosting happening though lol. Next was the shift boot gaiters and bushes. Made harder by dropping bolts under the car and having to fish them out lol. But the old boots were definitely shagged New fresh Mazda items in All back together and the noise is down a little as to be expected. I also refitted the drivers door card, just need to fit a “race” door pull to clear my legs and we are good to go!

For the rear heated window there is a connector to the right on the rear parcel shelf you need to bridge out, I think it was originally intended for a switch to turn it off when the roof is folded.

Did you remember to fill the bottom of that gear lever area with gear fluid? Makes a decent difference to the feel. I found putting synthetic gear fluid in the gearbox improved the shifting even more.

Projects/Classics: 1974 MGB GT (it's best not to talk about this one), 1972 Austin 1100 (The Purple Peril that has consumed a lot of fresh metal, welding gas and wire so far) Daily drivers: 2010 Audi A4 (my wife seems to have taken ownership of this), 2008 Audi TT (I hate them, supposed to have been a stop gap but currently stuck with it), Specialized Allez (cycling to work allows me to eat loads of cake)

Yeah found the connector I thought that was to supply the power to the heating element. But makes sense what you’ve said. I’ll take a further look.

This morning I put the Roadster through it’s first real test with an 80 miles trip to work! Over the peaks and up the M6. The car did great and didn’t miss a beat. Just a dodgy wiper blade to replace and all is good. Had some nice conditions to contend with coming over the tops too!
