Need to buy a new jack because my old one just died. Any tips on the good brands and also which ones to avoid. The jack needs to be 3 ton to suite my cars. All tips and advice welcomed.

I can't vouch for them but I have seen (www.)sgs-engineering(.com) mentioned on the forum's before and they currently have a sale on.
I'm tempted to buy an offering tonight before the sale ends, even though I don't really need one, the prices seem too good to ignore.

Yeh SGS sell the same Chinese ones you will see on eBay etc. All fairly priced and decent enough. Specs very slightly but I'm 99% they are all from the same production line.

Are you sure you need a three tonne jack? You normally only lift about a quarter to half of the car's total weight since the other part stays on the ground or is supported by axle stands. I have a 2T Compac trolley jack that we use for tractors as well. Great bit of kit, made in Denmark, hence not cheap. There are plenty of threads on this topic on here by the way, use the search function.

ive had a Clarke one for about 15 years or so by now, looking back I would get one with quicker lift, the height isnt especially low so sometimes some thin planks are required for very low vehicles, other than that well worth the £90 odd I spent on it, I don't think the price has changed significantly since either!

Same as welshpug. Mine's been really solid for 10 years now. It's got a decent base and decent sized saddle too, to prevent mullering your sills.

Thanks for all the replies. I decided to try the SGS 3 ton and I just happened to catch their online sale so saved a bit as well. The SGS jack looks very similar to my old " Master Mechanic " that I have had for over 15 years. I have a feeling they are a copy of an American brand but made in china. Will find out when it arrives.
