I have my modern daily up for sale, been up about 10 days. Chap messages me on fb can he come and buy it NOW,,,, if it was a dirt cheap bargain or a rare thing then fair enough, it’s a £1600 Fiat bravo, not even the sport. More messages followed about him coming straight round to buy it. Never did he ask about the car or ‘what’s your best price’ Thursday I got he was coming to buy it and did I mind Jersey notes, I said I did not know what jersey money looked like so would not know if it was genuine ( I googled it and it does not have to be accepted in the uk but banks will excite) After gnashing his teeth when I told him it was not legal tender he agreed to change it.
Still not asked anything about the car or best price.
He was coming Friday evening, I asked him to come this Saturday morning as I would be late home (not true but balls in my court) Friday...... no reply Messaged him this morning about the report from my police working wife (not true) that there are huge amounts of hookey notes in Liverpool and would he mind nipping to my bank with me to pay it in, for my peace of mind, it would only be 20 minutes....
Funnily enough he has not been round or replied.

Facebook selling is as bad as eBay for people saying there coming to collect things and never turning up.

Sounds more like a difficult car seller to me. So you’d accept Jersey currency? I don’t know about you but I’ve never seen Jersey notes before so I wouldn’t have a clue if someone was giving me fake notes. I don’t see it as the seller being difficult at all. It’s the seller making sure he doesn’t get done over with fake money!

Can you come to the bank etc etc. I’d just sack it off if I was the buyer

Sorry Wayne, I'm with Roach on this one. You'll never know if he was genuine or not because you've sacked him off. Lying about when you're home and what your wife does or whatever is just pointless, if you want to sell it you need to make it easy for the buyer. For the record I sell cars for a living and not everyone asks "What's your best price mate", never look a gift horse in the mouth. Personally I'd wait till I've got the money in my hands and then decide if he's genuine or not. GLWS Bud.

When you are buying a car, you ask about the car before seeing it, you ask about the lowest price you can get it for, you want to come and see the car. NOT I’m coming to buy the car now, without any questions or seeing it, the car in question is a 58plate fiat bravo 1.4 so it’s not rare, unusual or anything like that, read up on it, it’s a classic scam especially when you add in jersey money, those that think different have probably given their details to the people on the phone telling them that they have a virus, or sent money to a Nigerian prince.

The fact he disappeared when asked to deposit the money into a bank clearly shows he was dodgy. And Jersey notes.....WTF.
Selling cars isn’t rocket science - pay money, take car. The buyer appears to have some issue with the “pay money” part ha ha.

NOT That is not what he asked or said though, he asked nothing whatsoever about the car, nothing at all, you know yourself what you do when you are buying a car, YOU ASK about it, if it’s what you are looking for you arrange to go and see it, you talk about the price. Tell me how many daily family cars that are not in any way shape or form special you have bought where you did not ask a single question that you you just told the seller you are coming straight round to buy it, bet it never. Would you honestly have taken a currency that you had no idea what it looked like or was supposed to look like, that is not legal tender in the uk but can be used at sellers discretion and exchanged at banks You then use the internet to do some checking as alarm bells are ringing in your head and find that all the above are a classic fake money laundering technique at the expense of the original car seller

The majority of people don’t ask any questions when they’re buying a car before they arrive. That’s based on selling many, many cars!
I would, however be suspicious of accepting Jersey notes and would say that unfortunately I cannot and would require English Sterling, but I can’t see why anyone would fabricate a story about police and accompanying them to the bank. Nobody is going to agree to go to the bank in an unusual place with someone they’ve never met before! I know what real pound notes look like, so if someone turned up and handed me a load of them great, if they didn’t turn up then never mind, looks like they were a time waster, scammer or changed their minds, never mind!

You'll never know if he was genuine or not because you've sacked him off. This is true but I don't think it's a bad strategy. If you're not confident about the buyer, don't sell. The potential for aggro and stress is too strong sometimes to make it worth taking a chance on something you feel isn't quite right. Fair play to you for sacking him off. Maybe it doesn't require quite so much fantasy elaboration on your side though next time hahah.

I'm selling 2 cars at the minute and have had nothing but daft offers or legit ones coming from daft people who say they're coming and you never hear from them again, they ask the most inane questions and I've found a lot just do it to spend time whilst wasting yours, that's why I don't give my number out in ads anymore.
I understand the jersey note scepticism but it does sound that you was maybe being too cautious- adding in the other obstacles was a bit ott- if he was legit then you can see why he hasn't got back in touch.
But if you had an incline that something wasn't right then you're better to trust your judgement and wait for the right buyer even if it means taking less money.
When selling a car I haven't got to trust or like the person though, as long as they're giving me genuine cash I don't care who buys from me tbh.

Sounds to me like the sale failed on both sides. I wouldnt accept jersey money for the reasons stated in previous posts, but I wouldnt make an offer on a car with out seeing the car first, you don't know the condition of a car without seeing it so how do you know what offer to make? Telling the seller that a police person was involved would be enough for any law abiding folk to think WTF?

I have never sold a vehicle where the prospective buyer hasn't asked for more photographs. More information. And,more importantly,if the price is at all negotiable. I recently sold my Berlingo van on Face ache. First buyer bought it. Not after asking the above questions.... Got what I wanted out of it. Buyer is happy.
So, yes, I think you did the right thing by saying Uk sovereigns only. Bit over the top with the Police woman bit.People who's spouses are in the forces don't go around advertising the fact to potential car buyers. End of... If I heard that,I would have asked if your daughter was a lawyer, as it's so noticeably BS. Everybody and their dog on the internet is a Policeperson or Lawyer...🙄 But heyho, nobody out of pocket and you still have something to sell 😊
