is that cold start knob the usual place for a choke cable pull, or even more simply is it just a carb choke pull that BL repurposed? i mean it even has a flap picture on it and has twist lock that i am familiar with on the land rover Yes it is a choke cable with the choke symbol, straight out of the bl parts bin. It’s in the right place, just a bit of a reach from drivers seat.

Regarding the snapped bolt irwin sell stud extractors that you bang on with a hammer on the stud. They grip the stud and 9 times out of ten they can remove the bolt. Just had a google of them. Looks promising. I’m gonna give it some heat cycles an plus gas and see what happens.

Regarding the snapped bolt irwin sell stud extractors that you bang on with a hammer on the stud. They grip the stud and 9 times out of ten they can remove the bolt. I've used these myself and can agree, pretty damned good. :-) On a water pump bolt as well remarkably enough.

I’ve got broken studs out with a welder before but it’s always been in ally blocks or cylinder heads. Not done ion iron before and don’t want end up welding the nut to the block, so these tools might be the way forward.

Ive used welding nuts on studs in iron before seems to work as well as it does in alloys, the advantage over extractors is the heat can loosen the thread. If you are worried about welding to the block make a copper washer to go behind the nut.
If you can get a good swing at it giving the stud a few stout clouts on the end can loosen it enough to undo with grips as well.

Thanks for the heads up but I’ve managed to pick up a manual off eBay and also a technician familiarisation manual. Neither goes into the internal workings of the diesel pump. Must have seemed like the dark arts to your average technician of the day!

appears to be a Bosch VE pump, so thwy are well documented and easy to play with

my advice, if its running and not leaking, walk slowly backwards from the pump with no sudden movements, but don't break eye contact until you turn otherwise it will see it as a sign of weakness, if it rushes you fight your instinct to flinch or retreat.
