I take it that is the same VM 2.4 diesel used in the Range Rovers? That engine bay looks begging for the 6 cylinder VM to me. Bookmarked! short answer is yes. rover had intended to develop a diesel version of the rover V8 with perkins, it was prototyped but BL bailed on it due to extra development costs to make it reliable. so they fitted VM engines, then eventually the universally hated 2.5 turbo version of early coil sprung land rover 2.5 diesel. icberg project i think? they did make some but they couldnt handle the internal pressures i believe, last one was in the museum at Gaydon, don't know what happened to it after that was sold though?

I think I have some photos of that when it was at Gaydon. Shame they sold it. They sold off loads off loads of stuff including their Sd1 police car. ☹️

Really like the car colour, unusual and suits it perfectly. With those covers its worth tying them underneath the centre of the car from side to side otherwise in strong winds it will end up hanging off the back or front or on the car next to it. Probably doesnt matter at this stage but it will mark the paint over a few months outside. Great project and good to see it running so well.
Edit - I remembered when I used to keep mine outside under a cover I also had to tie the front and back down because the ends would be blown up over the car. It was an expensive soft lined cover but still marked the paint after some time, the second winter it was outside under a cover I used the transport plastic from new cars when they are shipped, put it on all the corners and edges to stop the marking, that worked. Anyway enough waffling I expect it will be inside soon.

This is all the awesome!
I saw it on the SD1 forum and I feared that this would be crushed and you have come along and made my day!!!
I will keep a close eye on this one, a very close eye indeed.
Good luck...!

Well it was dark and cold, but I am a man on a mission. First up was to replace the nearside front wheel and tyre, as it would only hold air for about 3 hours. Looked proper sad sitting on a flat and also looked curse word for anyone visiting the office, even under a cover. I have to remember that this car is here by kind permission of our office manager Ian and colleagues, so I cant take the curse word! Jacked it up and swapped it for a spare i had at home. Looks much better already! I wanted to remove the accelerator cable so I could try and free it off. In order to do this I thought I needed to remove the arm off the top of the fuel pump. I turns out that I didn't, but I didn't know that at the time. I recognised that the position of the arm relative to the pump was important and assumed that there would be a flat or similar so that the arm could only fit in one particular orientation. WRONG. It was on a spline, with many potential orientations. This of course was only revealed after the arm was lifted off. Doh! Anyway I pulled it all off and put the arm in the blasting cabinet to clean it up a bit. Arm on car rusty The cable was pretty crappy, the end nearest the arm was partly frayed. Id like to send the whole assembly off to be remanufactured or repaired but for the moment I am just going to re-use this one. First step was to work the cable forwards and backwards to free it off. There was all sorts of corrosion curse word between the sheath and the cable at both ends. Also the sheath had separated for the end covers. I taped a plastic bag around the cable and filled it with WD40 and left it hanging in the vice. It worked and WD40 curse word all over the floor. I cleaned up the cable, then put multiple layers of heat shrink over the cable to ends to hold it back together, then refitted it to the car. Liberal applications of heat shrink All back together Great success, car runs perfectly. Fcuking love diesel SD1's!!!! A video of much happiness

So no time for a break after the police SD1? The engine sounds like a proper old diesel. Keep up the good work!

What a cracking project!
Can anyone else rationalise why I always wanted one of these? I'm not sure if it's the rarity or the fact that the VM donk is a quirky engine. I've just got always had a pang of lust for one. Same as the want for D turbo Pug 604...

Did a tiny bit more on the car last night in the curse word rain and wind and dark. I pulled the remains of the starter wire from the relay holder, and re terminated the wire and inserted it back into the holder. Now the car runs from the ignition key! Old thing removed Offending corroded terminal Then i filled up the power steering reservoir. Power steering now works, but it makes a horrible noise any time it is under load. I'm hoping its just air in the system and it will bleed out. Fingers crossed.

Working outside in the wind and rain, true dedication. Starting on the key and PAS working is good going, fact the PAS works is a good sign too, like you say probably just needs a couple of hours for the fluid to settle. I think you are going to struggle to leave this car alone and looking how it was found till the Restoration show.

lock to lock several times is the old burping method. astras make that hhnnnnnnngggg noise when at full lock, probably due to the increase load on the rams

I think you are going to struggle to leave this car alone and looking how it was found till the Restoration show. I'd be sorely tempted to just do all the mechainical/safety/underneath stuff and roll it as is Maybe get the wheels looking spanking though, as we all know thats the crucial difference between an old wreck and something proper cool.
