by rapidly bookmarking ? oh no thats everyone else p.s if it makes you feel any better (it wont) but i have still not STOPPED feeling burnt out by lead up to NEC. i actually nearly went to doctors thursday, and i'm a man, imagine that, the doctors ! I'm glad it's not just me then - it must be a strange disease 'NEC showitus' or something to that effect - when I do the Restoration Show - that is a proper burnout job - Takes a few days of my time to get all the kit together and then the dash on the Thursday to get up there and get the stand built - we tend to be quite ambitious so it takes it's toll - but we have yet to fail - I normally take the following week off once I am back from the show (I know I'm getting wimpish in my old age)

Yeah that would be great 👍 Does it have to be exactly as is? Or can I start to fix stuff? Ideally has barnfound, scruffy & raggy ar8ed has it comes but there is probably no harm in getting it running and you starting to source what you bits you need for it - when the Jupiter was on the stand last year it lost quite a bit of the dusty appearance that it had when I first recovered it with the transport movements - so I took the all the fine stuff out of the workshop hoover bag and threw it over the car when it got to the NEC - once it was on display nobody was any the wiser! - I will pm you some contact details for Andrea who organises the stand - you will be good company - I have another Jowett going on the barnfinds stand Ok, that sounds good. I can limit myself to drive train and brakes etc.

I wasn't very vocal in your police car thread but enjoyed it very much. This one is, therefore, officially bookmarked! (And I'm a little less likely to do any work on my car...)
I didn't even know there was a diesel SD1. Is it a Rover made engine or did they borrow one from Perkins or somebody?

They didn't have time to develop their own so they sourced it from VM in Italy.

Goes without saying..BOOKMARKED. Seeing as how bad the Police SD1 was this is a salvageable car. Giving its rarity (version and colour) it deserves resurrecting. To get it stored and saved would be enough for me, just get the parts together and start the project when the fancy takes you. A resto holiday is no bad thing.

I’ve already bonded more with this one more than the police car, mainly because it runs (kind of) which make it alive.

Had my first proper constructive time on the car in daylight yesterday morning. It was raining but at least I could see what I was doing. Ive bought a £20 car cover off ebay to keep the worst of the weather out. It also means it doesn't look quite so bad sat in our office car park!. The cover is actually pretty good, so ive ordered 2 more for the 800 and drift car that are currently sat outside at my dads. The plan was to flush the coolant system, then refill, and make final preparations for starting it properly. I undid the rad hoses, the matrix hoses and one off the block. I doused all the rusty jubilee clips in WD40 and luckily they all came off ok. The only difficulty was getting the matrix hose off. Got it eventually. Then stuffed a hose in and let rip. Not much curse word came out at all. Just a few scaly bits. So hopefully the head isn't too corroded. I also bought a bottle of coolant system flusher, so ill let that soak/circulate, then drain and refill with normal coolant. Some how during this process I managed to get water into the air inlet and filter housing, so undid the inlet off the turbo to prevent any of that getting injected. Then I turned my attention to starting the thing. I removed the fuel filter, so I could crank without starting it. I cranked to try and get oil pressure, but the oil pressure light was working, so I just gave it some cranking, then refitted and bled the fuel filter. At that point I noticed that the pressure light had decided to start working after I wiggled some of the wires. I love a cheap fix. I then bled the line to the high pressure pump and cracked the unions to the injectors and did some more cranking. All that time I had left the ignition on, and was just jumping the starter relay to actually turn it off. So then when I tried to start it, it wouldn't fire. Me being new to diesels had forgotten that the ignition has to be turned off and then on again to trigger the glow plugs. Once I worked that out, and used a jump pack to boost my rapidly depleting batteries, it fired up! Great you might think, but also bad, as the engine accelerated uncontrollably to about 3000 rpm!!! I switched it off immediately but was worried that there was something dodgy going on. I was thinking a failed injector or diesel pump or even burning its own oil. Then I went and had a closer look at the pump. Turns out that the accelerator cable has seized in the partially applied position, hence the accelerating. I just need to free off the cable, or buy a new one, if I can find one. Phew, no major dramas. In the short term I just held my hand over the turbo intake to choke it of air and slow it. Made sure I didn't lose my fingers! Ive recorded a video of my bodging, as I started doing this when I had that gold 800 Vitesse and I quite like having it in video and not just static photos.

oh god i had visions of that youtube video where they are pushing carrots into a turbo compressor as the engine is flogging away engine sounds sweet, and the turbo is clearly working, weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep. down stream of a 2 year crash course on old diesel engines, mine only has glow plugs and a heated fuel filter. however, the alternate versions of my engine with bosch fuel pump had a cable operated cold start* which adds extra diesel pressure plus alters the pump timing for more favourable conditions for cold starting. (* i'm deliberately not using the word beginning "ch", thats for petrol engines and the best way proceed is to forget everything you know about engines )

Haha yes, can use the C work and I’m trying to remember it’s an accelerator not a throttle! the internets says the later HR488 engine used a KKK16 turbo, my ears pricked up at potential GM/opel content, KKK16 also used on cavalier turbo 4x4. neat

Yes this has a kkk k24 and the later 825 had the kkk k16. Not sure what the actual difference is?

Now that would make an epic commuter. I take it that is the same VM 2.4 diesel used in the Range Rovers? That engine bay looks begging for the 6 cylinder VM to me. Bookmarked!

Good, bigger means better! Apart from lag I guess? After the morning session yesterday, I travelled over to my mates place in Essex. He broke a few SD1’s and thought he might have some blue door cards. My drivers door card is looking particularly sad. It’s started to deform and it’s slightly split. However none of the cards my mate had were the same. He had some that were a dark royal blue, all single colour not two tone, and with no carpet at the base. He also had a set that were two tone dark blue and light blue, and that had carpet in the bases. But neither was correct. I could swap all 4, but then they wouldn’t match’s the dash or glove boxes. So I’m gonna try and repair mine. I really like the colour combination of this car. It’s perfect for a diesel. Dirty old blue body, then two tone, bluey green interior. Nice! It’s a bit odd that this car has two tone interior. I though it only came in the later 1985 and 1986 cars that had the burr walnut trim. This is more like a base model interior with the earlier satin wood trim on the doors and no wood on the dash? Strange. Love the genuine Moto-lita steering wheel too.

Bookmarked! short answer is yes. rover had intended to develop a diesel version of the rover V8 with perkins, it was prototyped but BL bailed on it due to extra development costs to make it reliable. so they fitted VM engines, then eventually the universally hated 2.5 turbo version of early coil sprung land rover 2.5 diesel.

They didn't have time to develop their own so they sourced it from VM in Italy. The same(ish) unit also found it's way into various Jeeps and bug eyed Ford Scorpios - I had one of the latter, proper cruiser, and good for well in excess of the Rovers mph - allegedly.

That card looks worse than it really is i think . I wonder if it could be steamed or wetted in some way again and then clamped and dried so its not warped ? Also the small holes looks like they could be restuck and then its just a case of a bloody good scrub [ i have used a wet scourer with washing powder on with good effect ].
