There are two main clutch pressure plate types that can be fitted to the series1 3.8 E type one with flat fingers and one with radius fingers and each type can be fitted but they each will only work with a certain type release bearing, I cannot remember which type goes with which but I do remember one is long and one is short and if you screw up and fir the wrong one it will work but make a sound similar to the one you have. I think I'm sorry to say you have a similar problem Jim. So many variations and not much documentation to back it up. That was common on the Vauxhall/Opels the change was around the mid 80s, from memory its a curved finger clutch cover with flat face bearing and a straight finger clutch cover with a round nose bearing
Hope the solution is simple!

Yes mine is the same. Non self centrering has a flat fingers and curved release bearing. Self centring has curved fingers and flat release bearing. I'm pretty sure its not a parts compatibility issue as the clutch operates perfectly. Its just a noise when under load.

Update....
I spent a few minutes with the car tonight. Don’t think it’s the gearbox or the clutch. When I first start it, the noise isn’t there. Then about 30 secs of running, if I rev it up I get that horrible rattle. Having foot on clutch or in gear or out of gear makes no difference. Rattle changes with engine speed.
So on the plus side, gearbox is probably ok. On the downside I now have an engine problem!!!

Could it be a loose injector?
The combustion chambers can also come loose, you might be able to narrow it down to a single cylinder listening with a screwdriver.

How about the alternator ? Or even the water pump??

Here is a longer video of the noise.
It can’t be the gearbox, as playing with the clutch on or off or in different gears makes no difference. Clutch works perfectly.
When it stops raining and I have some time, I’ll do a proper methodical fault finding on it.

it could be something very odd like Pete suggests and i hope it is. Does this engine has a chain for the cam? It could be that the tensioner does not function anymore. The engine starts well and picks up nicely for such an old diesel so it should not be too dramatic. Good luck, you deserve an easy solution (for what it is worth) Peter

The noise does sound like something rattling, something lightweight judging by the frequency of the noise.
Not really overly helpful, but I needed an excuse to get three consecutive comments from a Pete...
Cheers Pete

How are the thrust washers configured on this engine ? Is putting your foot on the clutch giving something a push sideways because of too much crank end float which then makes a noise? Hope it’s not . Other thought was what about when fully warmed up ? It’s still cold and not run properly for a long long time so might sort out after getting properly hot? Even perhaps get some driving in and see if it gets better or worse. Sure you will get to the bottom of it, don’t loose the mojo, perhaps moving onto some other bits that need doing will provide solace and thinking time. James

-shield rattle type: exhaust related -tensioner related: belts/chains/hydraulics -interference related: like a shield rattle, but a little different. like something attached to the engine or transmission that is hitting something else -upper engine: valvetrain? -lower engine: internal pump, oil delivery? I like the screwdriver or stethoscope idea to narrow it down. yeah, like you said in your vid, you need a "lovely assistant" you will find it! JP

Fingers crossed, touch wood etc, i think the noise has gone.
I'm not 100% sure what it was. It was either something to do with the cold start being disconnected and the fuel pump being advanced or retarded, causing weird fuelling, or the alternator belt that was really slack and might have been causing the alternator or water pump to do strange things, or a heat shield or the bonnet rubbing on the strut towers. Either way, the noise has gone and I'm hoping it doesn't come back!!!
So i am now motivated to carry on with welding.

So the Bonnet is the culprit it may stop after the gas struts are fitted?

Good to see the issue is gone. The engine sounds good and like a proper old school diesel but personally i think it does not match the car well if you compare it to a smooth V8. But it is nice to see you enjoy the car very much and that is more important then my thoughts Keep up the good work as its fun to read

Everyone expects a v8. This feels like a small tank!

Sometimes these things work themselves out, amazingly. Perhaps just using it, and getting those things right that you mentioned, ( especially getting those things adjusted) sent Murphy elsewhere.

right near your enrichment cable (with loose bracket) I noticed a (vacuum?) port that looked uncapped. The ground strap in that same area toward the front of the car looks a bit compromised at the cable end, too.
But I must say, that engine bay looks great!...so tidy and clean. well done! The motor also sounds good. I like the irony of expecting a petrol motor, but hearing the diesel. good stuff.

well to be fair the gearbox looked and operated sweetly, one of those "leave it until it gets bad enough to diagnose" kind of things.
