Here for sale is my 1985 BMW 520i (E28) finished in the classic Bronzitbeige paintwork and matching beige interior. The car has stayed in Norwich its entire life and was purchased by the previous owners from the Averills & Sons dealership in 1985 when the car was just 6 months old. Moving forward to last year, a change in circumstance meant that the previous owners decided it was time to part with it. Upon buying the car it needed little to get it through the MOT and passed in May with few advisories.
For a 33 year old car it really is in great condition, the paintwork is in very good order with only some minor scuffs and a small patch of rust underneath the windscreen which has been treated and touched in. Obviously we're not talking about a concours car here but still a very presentable
example and gets plenty of attention. The chrome is all in very good order, no holes in the bumpers or rust that I can see. The underside is solid and has had some welding repairs done to the sills for the MOT but certainly nothing major. The engine starts and runs well and has no problem keeping up with traffic or sitting on motorways. It definitely has the feel of a well-engineered German car, the ride is very comfortable and the chunky tyres on the steel rims ( whilst not the most attractive ) soak up any bumps in the road with ease.
The car comes with some history including the original bill of sale, 4 genuine keys and V5 is present. Please see below for further details.
Work carried out:-
- Service indicator board replaced with refurbished version so instrument cluster is fully functioning. ( common point of failure )
- Sills repaired
- Front discs & pads replaced
- Clutch master cylinder replaced
- Engine covers etc reconditioned
- Exhaust hangers replaced
- Service comprising oil, aux belt, filters and plugs.
- Diff oil replaced.
Good Points:-
- Just 2 previous owners
- Low mileage of 72,000
- Unmodified, original condition. Great interior with very little wear.
- 520i 5 cylinder model with manual gearbox
- Electric mirrors
- Electric aerial
- Power steering
- Windy windows ( one less thing to go wrong! )
- Sunroof ( no leaks and folds back / tilts as it should )
- Excellent condition inside and out
- Part history along with the original bill of sale.
- 3 original keys with dealer fobs.
- Near complete toolkit in boot, see photo.
- Bluetooth stereo ( bit of an eyesore but super handy for connecting straight to your phone! )
- Additional parts included with sale e.g. cambelt / waterpump kit, 30mm lowering springs.
Bad Points:-
First and foremost, the car was unfortunately recorded as a CAT C in 2005. After speaking with the previous owner this was the result of being bumped into from behind in traffic and the driver of the other car decided not to stop. The value of repairing the damage with genuine parts outweighed the value that the insurers placed on the car and the category C was recorded. The car was repaired at the owners expense and returned to the road shortly after. I cannot find any structural damage to the chassis and clearly any repair work has been carried out very well. Just to note, the cat C status didn't effect my insurance even under a classic car policy, I paid around £130 for the year fully comp.
Car will lock from passenger side but wont lock. ( central locking is still fully operational when accessed from the drivers door and boot ).
Occasional noise from the diff when cold, usually goes away once warmed up. EDIT - On further inspection the noise appears to be coming from somewhere further forward, I suspect the issue is the centre support bearing that supports the drive shaft is on its way out.
Slight blow in the exhaust.
This car would be a great opportunity for someone to enjoy an e28 with scope to restore further if desired. I've thoroughly enjoyed owning it and my only reason for sale is that I'm saving for a house and unfortunately owning 2 cars is a luxury I can no longer justify.
Viewing should be possible evenings and weekends with notice. Test drives will be granted with proof of insurance, otherwise I will be doing the driving. Please note that whilst I am happy to listen to sensible offers I will not accept any made before the car has been viewed and I will ignore any "what's your lowest price" etc. messages. I'm contactable on 07535 Five One Nine 810, texts are fine or calls after 6pm.
Any questions, please ask - Sold as seen, no trades.
Thanks for looking!
