I'm selling my Volvo 122s “Amazon”. Registered in June 1961, it is one of the earliest cars on the road in the UK...This particular car has been barn stored and not used since 1997 until earlier this year, having had a full body restoration in the early 1990s. As a result, this Amazon is extremely solid and straight.
However, as with any car that has been resting for 20 years, there was a lot of recommissioning to be done and I have recently spent the best part of £2500 on parts and labour. The result is an attractive, solid, reliable classic car that could be used everyday (if you wish!) and turn heads everywhere it goes.
As said, it is a very early car and as such has the twin carb 1600 engine and 6 volt electrics, along with the attractive wraparound dashboard and solid wheels with large V emblem hubcaps. As an added bonus, the car is tax and mot exempt (I have been over every inch of this car and I'm confident that the car is solid and safe).
The following work has been carried out recently
BRAKES- new master cylinder, new flexible hoses, 4x new wheel cylinders...The car stops very well now (considering it has drums all round and no servo assistance!). New handbrake cables were fitted at the same time
CLUTCH- New master cylinder, new slave cylinder, new return spring and bracket. The clutch was replaced shortly before the car came off the road in 1997.
ENGINE- The carbs have been balanced and tuned and the engine fitted with new distributor cap, points, condenser, rotor arm, spark plugs, leads. The beautiful glass bowl fuel filter was cleaned and looks and works great! The 2 engine mounts were also replaced. Obviously new engine oil and filter found their way in as well!
SUSPENSION + STEERING- 8x new front suspension bushes, new steering column coupling, new rear shock absorbers, new rear trailing arm bushes.
DRIVETRAIN- New propshaft mounting bushes, new rear axle limit straps, new gearbox and differential oil, 4x new Maxxis tyres
ELECTRICS- The contacts and earths were cleaned up to ensure the lights were visible and a new 6v battery was fitted. It had a new starter motor before coming off the road in 1997
INTERIOR- there wasn't really anything to do inside the car, apart from fixing the drivers window mechanism and door lock. The interior is generally in very good condition- the seats are a beautiful turquoise colour and are very good- there are a couple of very small nicks in the vinyl, but they still look great! The headlining was replaced in the 1990s and is in great condition. The dash top has no cracks and looks great- and it is original! The car has beige carpets that wouldn't have been fitted as standard. It also has inertia reel seatbelts fitted in the front.
The car drives very well- there is enough power to keep up with modern traffic, the 4 speed gearbox shifts nicely, the lovely “ribbon” speedometer always amuses me and works as it should!
In general, this is a great car to take to the next level- it could do with a bit of paint correction (after 20 years in a barn, it has a very light ”patina” and the chrome could use some attention)...however, don't be discouraged, the Amazon is very presentable and at a recent Amazon meeting, it received very positive comments from the Volvo community
I recomissioned this car with a view to keeping it for a while, having been interested in Amazons for many years, but personal reasons mean that it would be prudent to let it go to someone who understands it and will cherish it for years to come. I'm asking for £6250 for the car, a figure that I feel is fair considering the amount of work carried out and the rarity of these early cars- “how many left” suggests that there are only 2 earlier Amazons on the road in the UK.
Test drives are at my discretion (you will need to prove you have insurance) and the car will not be released until I have cleared funds (cash or bank transfer).
