Popped up the bodyshop Friday to see how things are progressing. Yeah 😂… Things are taking forever and it’s starting to get frustrating. Car has been there 5 months. Anyhow the rear arch inner and outer are now repaired: And the rear bumper mount that was full of holes has now been fixed: Because of the delay, I've decided to crack on with stripping more of the underside. The more I do now, the more I can coat with Epoxy and Raptor once the welding is finished. Stripped. No nasties found. Primed: Pile of supplies ready and waiting: Still, car is in good company. Mustang undergoing a full respray and a rather sorry looking E28 in for a full resto. Love these old beemers - crying out to have the 330 lump from my E46 shoehorned into it. This rather nice Corrado VR6 was in for the day too. Completely stock bar some grooved discs and a stainless exhaust. This discovery made me sad though. Whyyyyyy 😢 . I’ve never see an auto rado before! Thanks for staying awake at the back, hopefully some more exciting updates soon!

Whether you believe you can, or you cannot, you're probably right.

Are they just taking the p1ss? Haha, well it's a mate doing it but it's getting a little awkward chasing weekly. He's great at what he does, just a little unorganised!

My god that looks amazing.👍 Both of mine need tidying in this area, cant believe how much was cut out yours. At least i know it can be done 😂 Thanks dude! Probably went a bit OTT with the repairs but if I don't do it properly I'll only regret it. Best of luck with yours Painted all the underside Friday night. Burning the midnight oil into the early hours but managed to get the whole underside in Epoxy Primer. I used UPOLs own Raptor branded epoxy rather than Bilt Hambers this time as I wanted to minimise any chance of reaction or adhesion problems with the topcoat. Lots of rolling around on the floor trying to get a spray gun in all crevices (achem ) but I'm super lucky getting the use of a booth and proper spray gun and mask in out of hours use. It's potent stuff! Primer went on lovely and dried to a more gloss finish than the BH stuff. A few runs but that's down to my inexperience with the spray gun and most of the time spraying upwards about 2 inches from my face

I know i keep using words like this, but having a tornado red mk2 myself, that underside is beautiful lol
I'd be too scared to drive it after all that work, but that is the point of all the work so it can be driven without worrying about the environmental affects on it 👍

Some good work there, makes the wait worth while I hope. Bet you can't wait to get it out on the open road.

Its far from show winning but this is a drivers car and I just want it to look OEM and protect it for another 20+ years Some good work there, makes the wait worth while I hope. Bet you can't wait to get it out on the open road. Thanks! Probably won't be on the road until next year realistically. Because of the delays, I'm currently in the position I really didn't want to be in. Winter is here, the car has no MOT and I'm moving house so may end up trailering it somewhere for storage and putting things on hold. We'll see over the next few weeks!

Just read this entire thread for the first time. I admire the quality ethic with which you do all your work, and while I too have experienced the multi-month delays in getting bodyshop work done, that sure is nice stuff your friend is doing. This GTI has the same sort of appeal as an air-cooled 911 and appears to have earned its way deep into your psyche, like only great cars can. I will watch for future updates. Best, John.

This is brilliant and thank you for all the photos and clear writing. I'm pinching ideas for my scirocco as i too am at the stage of stripping the underseal gunk off the back underside. I think i will be also using raptor....eventually.

Appreciate the kind words. Yes Luke has done a great job on the panel beating; you can barely tell it's been repaired at all and it's been done to a high standard. It's certainly here to stay. I'm not made of money (far from it!) but I try to do the best job I can with the materials/money I have available. It's far from a show car but that's never really what it's been about for me This is brilliant and thank you for all the photos and clear writing. I'm pinching ideas for my scirocco as i too am at the stage of stripping the underseal gunk off the back underside. I think i will be also using raptor....eventually. Cheers Toast! If I can help at all with any questions give me a shout!

You've nailed the underside bud, you've been far more thorough thst I have with the doing it body colour and I fully understand and sympathise what its like to remove underseal on your back and cope with delays from bodyshops. Bet you can't wait to get her back and start reassembly.

I still have behind the front wings and wheel arches to knot wheel so the underseal stripping fun isn't over yet. I guess at least with that I'll be able to sit rather than having the grinder an inch from my face haha. This is incredible work, hats off to you my man! Kinda wishing I'd done this with mine before making the visible stuff all pretty! Cheers dude! Doing it in the wrong order really, have the underside component free would have made life so much easier but hey ho! So as of yesterday, after 8 months, the car has left the workshop! Rear quarter now sprayed, exhaust back on and fuel tank re-instated. Yes it looks an absolute shed... Yes it's covered in 3 inches of dust... Yes the interior is stacked with parts... Yes there's gaffa tape covering trim holes... Yes I'm having to do the ONE thing I was desperately trying to avoid - moving it in the winter... ...but it runs and is back on four wheels! Didn’t get chance to take photos but Luke and I popped the back window back in using paracord (plus a few choice words haha). I also took advantage of the ramp to swap the cambelt. My 1 year old Bosch S4 battery decided it didn’t want to charge any more so had to swap that out for a new one too. Fired up first time. As I’m currently trying to move house the car has to be mothballed for now and the work paused, but if it all goes to plan I’ll finally have my own garage! With all my tools, the car, the parts, all in one place. Oh the novelty! I have jotted a 2 page long list so far of tasks to sort on the Golf - comprehensive updates on the way once I know which way is up again!

So it's been a while since the last update. Moved house so for the first time in 18 odd years of mucking about with cars I now find myself in the fortunate position of FINALLY having my OWN garage. It's like all my xmas's came at once After sorting out the garage floor, painting walls, electrics and getting some lighting up in the rafters, this week I was in a position to move the car in Hired a small low loader Peugeot and set to work. A little nerve-racking as I've never done this before (amazed at how little instruction I got with it!) but all went well without dramas. Even though the car is perfectly drivable the winch made life very easy and we were back in no time at all. I did get a small bollocking from the GF for flashing the roof beacons at 6am. Yes I am a 6-year-old trapped in a 30 something body Unfortunately, it looks as though whilst it's been in storage something has dripped on the bonnet and trashed the paint Looks like it's localised to the bonnet at least but that's now another thing to sort out! But, it's home and now I can finally get some hours in on getting this thing back together and up to scratch ready for the summer. Over the moon!
