Hey guys, I finally got the time to change the water pump on my 1972 mk3 Cortina, had a small leak, pretty sure it was just the gasket but brought a nice shiney new pump from Burton Power with gasket, also new thermostat and new alternator belts, fit it all yesterday evening, left it overnight, refilled coolant this evening and started it up to bleed and check for leaks etc. I now have a noise that almost sounds like the impeller is just catching inside! Can’t think of anything else that would be making the noise! If anyone has any similar experience with water pumps or can give me any advice it would be very much appreciated. Engine is a 2 litre pinto out of a 1989 mk3 Granada none power steering, viscous fan removed

Hi, It may be the fan on the front of the alternator rubbing the body of it, you may have knocked it when doing the w/pump. Try to narrow the noise down by putting the end of a long screwdriver or suitable rod on the pump body and holding your ear against the other end, it acts like a stethoscope. Watch out for the twirly bits going round and round.

Thanks Colin, I’ll try that with the screwdriver on the pump to see if it narrows it down. The sound is just like the metal fan catching on the alternator but it seems clear and I definitely didn’t knock it, I even loosened the belts a little just in case I put them on to tight and it was causing it to catch, they are slightly smaller than the old ones! The impeller on the new pump is a different design than the old one, the new one has blades where the old one was a round enclosed impeller, that’s what makes me think maybe it could be just catching, hopefully the screwdriver thing will help! I do have a pic and a video of the noise but can’t seem to be able to post them! Thanks again, Ant

Bolts not too long on the pulley and rubbing the casing? Take the belts off and turn by hand.

Colin you’re a genius, did the screwdriver thing and could tell right away it wasn’t the water pump....thankfully. So that just left the alternator fan, I definitely didn’t knock it and it wasn’t catching when turning the engine by hand, but I did notice one blade was slightly off to the rest...gave it a little bend and hey presto 😃 metal noise gone 👍 don’t know why it wasn’t making that noise with the old belts on but hey who can make sense of these things! I did check the bolts on the pulley 1st to make sure they wasn’t fouling as the casing is slightly different on the new pump! Guys I can’t thank you enough for taking the time to give me advice, I really appreciate it,
Thanks,
Ant

It's good to hear the outcome as so often nothing is heard again and no one learns what does and doesn't work. Colin
