I have been meaning to start a thread about my little old Austin A30. I have owned this car for years and it has spent many a year dormant, in storage awaiting parts, me to get divorced and other projects ahead in the queue. It is now in the "operating theatre" at the man-cave and significant progress is being made. It is currently inverted on the roll-over frame and when the underside is completed, it will be put back the right way up to be made more beautiful! The idea is to use the car for mild competition (hillclimbs & sprints, maybe drifting), track-days, and general classic car events. The spec isn't fully finalised, but the main parts are already in place. Pretty much all of the work done so far, has been completed by me and I intend to carry on doing as much as I can myself (for reasons of ego, lack of money and basic tight-fisted attitudes!) Main spec is as follows : Engine ------ 1380cc A-Series from a Midget fitted with a modified head from a BMW K1100RS motorbike, original cam used as a jack-shaft, baffled sump Maniflow exhaust manifold and utilising the BMW injection via a Megasquirt ECU Gearbox ------- Ford Type-9 5-speed with Tran-X straight-cut, close ratio gear-kit Rear Axle --------- Original casing with LSD and stronger shafts. Midget brakes Suspension ---------- Loosely standard, but with 3 leaf rear springs, Rae-Davis rear A-frame and front fabricated upper wishbones (like the Front-line setup) Telescopic dampers all round. Rae Davis big front ant-roll bar at the front. Bodyshell --------- To look like a classic saloon racer with full Custom Cages roll bar. At the moment it isn't painted, but much new metal has been let in with new sills, new floors etc. Spare wheel well has been removed from the boot floor for a big silencer to live. Heated screen instead of a heater. Rear arches stretched like the Goodwood Revival racers (not a simple job!). Mostly seam welded for maximum strength.

Look forward to more details on this. Interested to know more about fitting the bmw head to the A series. This is quite a common conversion on BMC (real) Minis now & it is a little bit involved, but not as extreme as you would think. Most of the mods are involved in the block to head interface. The head is dimensionally quite a good fit around the bores, which helps. Mine is a relatively low-tune with sensible compression, cast pistons, normal (not steel) crank & rods, as I want to use it on the road too. Look up Specialist Components for more info, but this type of messing about isn't cheap unless you do quite a bit yourself. Hopefully, will be a fun car to drive. I also like the fact that it fits on the original engine mounts

Now that's a starter for ten!! Many more details and pictures please! I will endeavour to add more photos & info as the build progresses. Bought some Sierra discs & calipers on the bay of e today, so that will be a challenge for the weeks ahead to get some more potent front brakes. I'm hoping the engine as mean as it lets looks.........

This is reminding me that I need to pull a finger out and crack on with my A30. Love what you are doing with your Austin. Should be a right giant killer when it’s done.

Fantastic! Reminds me of drifting my a35 back in 1991, of course that wasn't really drifting, just an 18 year olds spirited driving on crossplies... Will be watching this with interest.

Yes the work has started again during the furlough from work. The shell has gone off to be blasted & etch primed. In the meantime, I have given the engine a quick l

Woops! Finger trouble. The engine has had the sump removed for a quick check inside (its sat for a long time), all ok. Now on to the bits that were incomplete last time. Now got MG Midget flywheel and hybrid clutch to match the Ford gearbox (may not be man enough, but will get the beast mobile). A new geared starter fitted, then turned attention to other end of the engine. Spend a load of hours getting the cam belt to run nicely and got a nice toothed belt for the water pump, together with trigger wheel for ecu. Will have oil line to head done tomorrow and hydraulics for clutch done tomorrow. Will add pictures if I can work out how to!

I have loads of photos of interesting progress, but I can't find out how to do this from my Iphone. The other photos were processed through my now defunct computer. Anyone know how to do this please? Thanks, Duncan

Ooh nice. Like an A30 and the BMW head deal is the icing on the cake.I´m amazed that every old A series doesn´t have one by now.
