Did you ever have one of those days when you are sitting around minding your own business and suddenly, accidentally end up buying a car?
Here is the background to this event:
There is an automotive competition held in FL every year. The event is hosted by a magazine called Grassroots Motorsports and the goal is to build a car that will compete in a drag race, a slalom and a "concourse" car show. The kicker is that the total budget cant be over the year in $$ value. So, $2019 USD is my total budget. Been on my bucket list for a lot of years, but distance, time and the fact that everything in Canada is more expensive than the US made it a challenge.
Then this shows up on my Radar. "Volvo 240 No rust, drives, needs electrical. $800 firm" On a put-up or shut-up basis from a friend who might ne tired of hearing me go on about the challenge, I went off to look.
Firs appearances are promising. I do like the wheels. And considering that the vehicle of choice is going to have to transport three of us from London Ontario to Daytona FL, it is the right size.
And this might explain the fact that the car is solid everywhere I look.
They did mention electrical issues and the open window was the first indication. Been down long enough to make a mess inside. Fuse-box is interesting and the push-button is the starter button.
Owner mentioned that the car ran. Where this suddenly got interesting is when the bonnet was opened .
This suddenly got interesting. Whoever did the conversion did a very nice job. It did run and nicely at that. No test drive due to transmission line leak. Hope it is that simple but no matter, not in love with the AOD. Remember budge, if it works, it stays, if not I go 5 speed.
The plan is to do as little as possible to make this a car that three people can ride in all the way to FL and maybe back ( car is disposable if need be) Turn a 14 second 1/4 mile and place in the top half of the slalom event. Probably wont be doing much with it until spring ( other than collect cheap parts as I can find them ) since the Molvo needs to get done over the winter. So consider this a tease. Mental goal is to drive both this and the Molvo to the big Volvo meet in June. I do love a dealine. I love the sound they make as they go flying by!
