Best of both worlds might be a modern speaker in a suitable period enclosure. This is where being in the US is seriously in your favour, it was a much more affluent society than anywhere in Europe during the 50s and 60s, so stuff was both better quality and sold in far higher numbers than anything you could buy over here.
I've no doubt that whatever you choose will look in keeping, whilst simultaneously performing very well. 👍👍

My worst worry about dying is my wife selling my stuff for what I told her it cost...

That's the thought, I need to pull the crappy old carpet up on the parcel shelf and eyeball it to see. I need to replace the carpet there so at the same time a square chrome or semi-square grille for it to hide under probably would work if there's room under it.

How big is your parcel shelf? An age suitable hatbox perhaps? Line the inside of it properly and you could have a small sub!

How big is your parcel shelf? An age suitable hatbox perhaps? Line the inside of it properly and you could have a small sub! The parcel shelf is diminutive, probably big enough for a 6x9 but little else. It has a couple of 80's Pioneer speakers sat on it right now which look horrible. I need this to look "right" when someone looks in through the back window. It also needs to be able to tolerate a lot of sunshine. Phil

So, I decided to paint the front of the radio silver to match the rest of the chassis (military metallic gray). I went to the hardware store. The paint said "lid indicates color". Remember in the eighties when the lid was shiny silver and it came out metallic gray and it was thoroughly disappointing? We've come full circle. Phil

It's coming close, I think! However, yours is there for all to admire, mine is never seen.

Whether you believe you can, or you cannot, you're probably right.

Nice old set. There's plenty people around who fix old radios though. You can get that repaired. Phil

Took some dense foam sheet and got all arts and crafts, the radio originally had a rubber cone to direct the sounds out of the grille in the dash better, so I had a go at making one. Phil

So far so quiet. Rain and a bit of wind. Blue sky and sunshine (oppressively airless) right now as the eye nears. Pulled the crappy 80's speakers out. And then pulled the remnants of carpet and the cardboard out. No holes so rear speaker will have to have a bit more thought. Phil

A "stealth" shelf perhaps?
Raised , shaped and trimmed to blend in?

A "stealth" shelf perhaps? Raised , shaped and trimmed to blend in? I was thinking that but there's not really enough room. I'll work on something. It's not critical right now because the front one works well enough. Phil

Phil I am so impressed with the quality of sound of standalone bluetooth speakers. Would it be possible to get something like that and hide it in a period kleenex box or picnic basket or some suche thing?

Those use funny witchcraft to convince your brain your ear heard things they are incapable of doing (low bass notes, for instance), which is incredibly clever. That approach works well, yes. You know that's not how I'm going to do a radio set though... Phil
