The paint looks great for its age! how does the modern fuel affect the running or can you guys still get leaded stuff? I think the paint is about 20-25 years old, looking at it. It comes up reasonably but the sun has crazed it badly in places. Funnily enough, this engine was designed before tetra-ethyl lead was added to gasoline as an anti-knock compound- that came in later in the fifties and higher compression, higher performance engines became common. It has hardened valve seats from the factory and is designed to run on unleaded fuel. Ethanol merely does a number on the rubber parts but doesn't ultimately affect running much. So, it'll run happily on regular fuel with only a slight adjustment to the timing. Phil

Yeah, I was thinking of various ways to sort it out, one method would be to drill it out, tap a thread in the hole and drill a bolt through it's center to the correct size and screw it in. Then at least, like a bushing, it would be replaceable. Space is at a premium on the one that's gone sloppy. Phil That would work , use brass as it self lubricates and fit a locknut either end to stop it moving , simpler than my idea

Flung a bit of paint over the rust at the back. Yeah. Shush. I know. Looks better from ten feet away. Simply in lieu of doing it properly until I can do it properly. (Welding machine required). I also hate blue. Always dries so dark. Second take, shall see how dark that is tomorrow. Probably way off. Phil

It is not just about the cosmetic side though Phil,
There is also a bit of weather sealing going on.
And as you say, 10 foot is 10’ and right now it makes all the difference

And as you say, 10 foot is 10’ and right now it makes all the difference Ultimately there's a lot of grind/weld in this car's future so the paint finish is going to be ruined from that. Ideally I'd love to pull the body off and get it media blasted and then work on repairing the rust. For now, it can be a pig in lipstick and get some suitable giffer touch-ups to the paint. Phil

I think it looks fine and would be more than happy to smoke around in it as is! it would give you a chance to iron out the gearbox/engine teething problems as well

Ugh, the engine is being a douche.
I think I need to pull the head off again and recheck the valves. Sounds like I may have a couple that are sticking.

I have most of it flat but it is warped; the center two exhaust ports sit in about 1/16" so for now I can double gasket it to get it to seal but long term it really needs to go on a deck mill and be machined flat. Phil

Looking at it, the front section isn't warped but the back is.
The front is always direct in the air blast from the fan so will have been cooler than the part that's tucked all the way back down the back of the engine compartment.
At least #8 valve is sticking.
Off with her head! (Tomorrow at the earliest)
