Icicles today. Only small ones but the wind chill is currently about -10. Started up without complaint though and idled away happily. Phil

-5 this morning. Car started first push of the button, though it would appear the electric fuel pump has given up. Phil

And there was me thinking you were below the frost line? Normally we are, there was a large polar vortex which pushed way down south. This afternoon we're meant to be nearly +20°c.

Temperature fluctuations of that magnitude and speed must be interesting on structures.

Temperature fluctuations of that magnitude and speed must be interesting on structures. Concrete and asphalt don't care for it much, no.

Put a new fan belt on. Quiet now. Much better for cold weather. Heading out to the cruise night in town. We'll see who turns up because it's chilly.

I think the damp got into the radio because it started playing all crackles and pops. Pulled it out of the dash. Always a fight. Cleaned up the connections. It all glows again. Tested for an hour on the bench. Really needs a new vibrator and a new speaker but it's good enough for now. Got it back in the car just in time for it to rain. Phil

Correct. It's all vacuum tubes so needs to run at about 250 volts DC inside.
It uses the same principle that the spark plugs use to bump the battery voltage up to something much higher, in this case it's just not as violently high. The vibrator buzzes a pair of points using a magnet switched on and off rapidly. That is connected to a transformer coil which works like AC power supplies in anything you plug into the wall, just in reverse- taking a low voltage and making it higher.
If the points get dirty it doesn't work so well.

If the points get dirty it doesn't work so well. Phil Having piqued my interest I found you can get solid state vibrators in the same cans as mechanical ones they replace. It may be heresy but see royalsignals.org.uk/vibs/Now I want a valve car radio

Car didn't want to start this morning. After adjusting the auto choke it fired up happy but I think perhaps needed gasoline... Spent the day assembling furniture, this is the way home and the last view of the speedometer working. I'm guessing either the plastic drive gear broke or the cable has snapped because it was working fine then dropped to 0 suddenly as I was driving. Phil

One way of keeping the mileage down…. James This is also the first car I've owned where driving in reverse actually takes miles off the clock. The odometer doesn't have a one-way drive inside, it is simple. I think both the cable and gear are both available. I'll have to find out if the cable has become difficult to turn, if so figure how to fix that and then replace the broken parts. Phil

Also, I need to call the company because there's no sign of the water pump I ordered 2 weeks ago.
