It's like your sat driving a Wurlitzer jukebox or some other symbol of everything that was great about 50's Americana. Such a lovely old thing it is. Very much so. I describe it as sitting on grandmother's comfy settee, with a wurlitzer in front of you. It's a nice way to watch the world go by.

Liberated from the wreckage of my garage, spare carburetor. Replaced the missing screws. Tightened them well this time (they have shakeproof washers so heck only knows why that fell to bits). Drives better now.

Drives better now. Because shakeproof washers only make you feel better. They don't actually do anything. Like using a nyloc nut on a bolt that's too short to enter the nylon.

They were a thing back then but testing later found they did nothing (in fact they make torque retention worse) hence why all the oem's stopped using them after about 1980, a dab of blue loctite is your best bet.

Well that's opened that can All the info/"research" I've seen in the past on this subject relates to the use of helical split washers, there are many other types and little is said about them. Personally I think they all have their uses if used correctly for the application. Loctite is good if the correct type for the application is correctly applied and the threads are clean, oil, chemicals etc can render it next to useless. If it's safety related then castellated nuts & split pins or wirelocking or nylocks is the way to go I.M.O. of course

Nord-Lock washers are good, so are Belleville washers if there's heat cycling involved, used both on high power electrical equipment offshore.

They're all useless if you don't tighten the nut properly first.
Lock washers and tabs are only really any use to show you care about the fastener coming undone, but they aren't particularly effective. Lockwire is mostly there to cause blood sacrifices to the god of bits not falling off, although it might help to hold any broken bits in place.
Nylocs are effective, but not the ones you see where the bolt doesn't protrude through them. Ordinary nuts should be the same. Nylocs are useless on exhausts...
loctite is good, and easy to use if the parts are degreased first. It's main disadvantage is that unlike all the other methods, there is no visual clue that it's been used.
And if you really want to start a bitter argument, make a definitive statement about whether a jam nut goes above or below the normal one.....

Continued tearing down the remains of the garage. Doesn't look like much but that was a lot of work. Unearthed the DVR, which has been sat upside down in the rain for six months. Surprisingly it booted up and showed there the last recorded images before the power went out on the morning of the hurricane. Phil
