Thar sucks mate - especially as you are right there. Maybe you'll find a few minutes here or there - the distraction would surely be good for what ails you. Does FEMA kick in or are you all left to your own devices? Is it a struggle to find contractors to work or is it fairly well organized? Sending you best wishes from the west. Nope, very little assistance from FEMA because we have insurance on the house. ... Not that it covers a whole lot but hey.

How does it work with insurance in regions of major weather? Most insurers don't want to cover this sort of thing as it's an almost gauranteed payout on every premium

Sorry to hear you're having to sell off a few of your prised posessions. Must be tough as it's a result of things that are completely out of your control. It has a rather anti-climactic feel about it given the journey you've taken us on with the Pontiac...and where you would have gone still. Well, there's the fury to look forward to when you're ready! Saw this the other week at my second or so outing with the Granada coupe and thought of you...

How does it work with insurance in regions of major weather? Most insurers don't want to cover this sort of thing as it's an almost gauranteed payout on every premium here in Spain a small % of any type of insurance is paid in to what is called 'consorcio' = consortium. A ring fenced gov.es fund which whenever there is a weather event in Spain that is deemed to be an " extrordinary event" the consorcio takes over from the insurance companies who do not have to worry about claims falling on them. In 2011 here we had an earthquake & major damage which came under extrordinary event, as did the following years 'gota fria' & extensive flooding. works well as long as you are insured. If uninsured you are at the bottom of the pile if there is anything left.

Well possible change of plan. My mother doesn't want me to sell the car, so offered to buy it.
I may take her up on that.

My mother is not known for making rash decisions; I know the rationale behind the offer. Last time they came visit my father and I spent time working on the car but it wasn't ready for the road then. Since then, it is and she wants to be able to go ride in it. She was upset when I was dismissive about keeping it, but I had put myself in the mental place that it's just a car and it needs to be sold. Phil

Having been in a similar (though quite diefferent) situation where SWMBO was downsized 11 months into a job which she had been assured would be long term so we had moved to one of the most expensive cities in the world with an eye watering (for us) mortgage. My immediate response was to sell the cars and move. SWMBO wouldn't let me and 10 years on all is well. In truth the sale of a dented Pontiac and a Renault (in Lousiana! ) won't add much to the bottom line, but, they do add a lot to your mental health. Let your mom help and just park the cars till the house is in order. They will wait and when you have the time and resources to get back to them you can. In the meantime, if nothing else your sweat equity in fixing the house and garage will more than makeup for the dollars from the cars. It is a nasty predicament (we did Charlie/ Frances & Jean in Florida in 2004 and helped out after Katrina) but I do recall that things got better quicker than I could have imagined. Hang in there!

I'll admit, I've put little sweat into repairing the house. I've decided I pay enough in insurance that it can pay for that. The garage though, once the house is livable again, will be subject to rebuild if possible. I need to thin the herd though. 3 half broken cars is too many.

Garage rebuild, whichever way you do it, could be a custom rebuild, in a way that works for you.
Thinning the herd always gives room to breathe and also more importantly, a better opportunity to focus more on important things.
Looking forward to the garage build when you get to it.

No custom build, just back as it was. Or a close approximation therein. I have my reasons for wanting to reduce the number of vehicles I have. Phil

I suspect that, were I in the same situation, I would want to be able to get me and mine out of harm’s way and not leave stuff to the mercy of Mother Nature; so if I couldn’t build a storm proof storage area then I’d want a car that I could jump in and take with me along with all the rest of the important stuff. The things we have around us tie us in ways we don’t really appreciate. Sometimes I would give everything just to be able to walk away from where I am and who I’m with, and it’s only the workshop full of half finished projects that stops me; because those projects are who I am and leaving them is unthinkable.

I think if I lived in an area with that sort of weather the garage would be underground. Hope you soon get your life & house back on track.

Well, looking at it:
Renault may be going to an enthusiast. Pontiac stays. Future unknown. Plymouth stays. Exact future unknown but likely to be something interesting.
Yes, we are 2'8" above sea level and about 6" above the water table where we are. Basements don't happen.
The wind didn't really do much. It was the tornadoes that got me. The native Americans called this place "land of the crazy winds" for a reason.
