2nd time in a couple of weeks my spider has left me stranded.
1st time no electrical power to start, put jump leads on and it started instantly, put the battery in charge and it struggled, had it tested and it has a dead cell, put a good spare on that I had in the shed, car works perfectly.
This morning it struggled to start at the petrol station, very slow and I suspect briefly there was no power at all as my lcd trip went to zero, it did start though, then started again when it was time to go.
Popped to the shops and no way it was starting, wife came and jumped me (🙀) her car on tickover it started straight up, drove home.
Grabbed the meter and then the car started straight up, meter registered 0000 got a spare meter and with the engine running it read 13.97. @ tickover and 14.00 @ 1000rpm
Put the lights and heater on and it read 13.60 @1000rpm
Does that sound like a failing alternator or should I try and clean up all the alternator/starter connectors and earth leads first
Either way on an Alfa twinspark it’s a bloody awful job.

Alternator to me sounds fine.
Cleaning the contact areas always helps.
Have you tested the new battery, and what battery should the car have according to the databases? Like the your last battery, get a capacitance tester on it and not a voltmeter reading.
It's got cold lately, which will have an effect on the effective cold cranking amps of a battery. In short, the CCA tends to go down the colder it gets, and higher the warmer it gets, which is why battery 'warmers' are sometimes sold. So while you may get away with an iffy battery over the summer months, it may well shaft you over winter.

New battery now tested, that’s ok, found a good few cases of the same problem and same car, starter motor, I shall have that tested on Monday, I cleaned up the earths I could get at. First thing starts are never a problem, the car waits until I take the roof off and I am away from home |

I'd still check the battery.
According to msot websites his car needs a 075 battery. A tired smaller battery won't be close to the CCA of a fresh 075, especially now it's getting colder.

I will have the battery rechecked tomorrow along with the starter motor, I do not want to just buy a new battery then find the starter is faulty, knowing the way this car treats me it will need both  |

Ah, it has been checked? Fair enough. If it is the right size (i.e a 075) and the CCA is within acceptable levels still as a result of the test you should be OK.
Where is the starter on that? If it's not by the exhaust manifold etc. I doubt it's heat soak, but you never know.

Starter is at the back of the engine at the bottom of the block, fiddly to remove but a whole hell of a lot easier than the alternator, so I really don’t want it to be that |

I have a new starter motor in the original housing, it did work if a little slowly, cost just less than a Chinese copy and a hell of a lot cheaper than an original.
I’m thinking it was the quick release clamp on the negative battery terminal, it’s in an awkward spot, the clamp was tight on, I removed it and the earth lead only to find that inside the post clamp was thick green corrosion, the bolts that clamp n the lead were too long and the slot in the plastic case was too thin.
When I locked it down on the bench I noticed that it was pushing the lead away from the clamp.
I opened up the slot, remade the end of the lead, put in new fasteners and cleaned up inside like new.
Everything back in the car, exhaust back on,,,,,, went for a start, well it starts quicker and when I put the meter on it reads 14.28 @ idle, I’m thinking the clamp caused the issues.
It will be closely monitored over the next week.
