good to see some forward motion. at least you had some solid tin to glue to! wondered of those tryes come in piaggio ape sizes??? Morning mate, Well, that was a short night, now it’s raining and I wanted to get the outrigger in this morning before heading out to Paul Y in Essex to pick up some bits taking Joy along for a random visit to IKEA as she has not been there for 4 years. Now rain has temporarily stopped play. The rust pattern on this truck is soooooo weird. Only the centre of that panel was rotten, lower and upper was thick strong metal, and as you can see, it’s only the rear half of the outrigger that’s gone. I am thankful though, for having a reasonable job to do, rather than a massive one or even a weigh in job. Regarding the APE wheels, I was tempted to turn them around before the man saw them and laid claim to them.

So much for more sleep, got another hour in. Got up to feed Harleyat 07.00, who was asking since 05.00 to be fed, only to then lick the gravy off the wet food and walk away in disgust. Cats. Was planning on getting the underside of the truck finished today before heading out. Rain had different plans by 07.30 so it’s on hold for the moment. Back to last night before I shut shop to get ready for my “Meals on Wheels” from Joy. Craig had given me some nice thick folded steel plate, part of a high end gas BBQ construction that I had eyeballed on his pile of stock. It’s the same gauge as the outrigger, so would be just fine, if I could incorporate some of the bends. So in with Sharpie under the truck, some cardboard and scissors, lay out, mark out, cut out and transfer onto the metal. Leaving me with a stightly oversized panel to trim back and fit once I cut away what is left of the outrigger. Folding vise. Once you copied the template, cutting and folding goes easy. Happy?? Yes, very happy. Because the outrigger is angled in some planes, it looks cockeyed, but is meant to be so. I need to just infill the little gusset piece before offering it up a last time and cleaning off the metal, getting primer on the hidden side and adding the Vactan rust converter stuff that I still don’t know if it makes any real different, but I am happy to just add into the mix to the insides of the outrigger where I can reach. Amazing how long it takes to do every piece. Seems not too bad........ Now if the rain would just go away and let me get this little job done. Later guys.

"Seems not too bad........" Looks pretty good to me ! almost looks like a bought-in repair panel ! ...and I like the 'bigtruk' graphics ..but ...isn't changing the size of the rear windows a 'mission creep' i.e "..not a project ..." ?

Glad you got the “not a project” part of the title. Panel came out oK for how thick it is.

Agree with the big truk colours, looks good, although I wouldn't want "big truk" written on it. Whatever you choose is right for you though. Well done for cracking on with the repairs, not clear from the pics but are cutting the rot out or plating over. Keep up the good work!

Billybob looking a wee bit depressed in the shade there while the new steed speaks with the forked tongue, but I’m sure they’ll both get a turn in time.
Loving that 79 NASCAR look in the red white and blue. Really lifts the overall look whereas the Bigtrak colours tend to age it.
79 NASCAR also suggests there’s power (and fun) under that hood whereas Bigtrak is more family truckster (National Lampoons).
I think those RWB colours would also look ace with the canopy off.

I gotta hand it to you all. This truck is bringing my head and enjoyment back to where I can recognise it as a positive influence. After work. Before shower last night. This morning it was raining, so I could not get out in a hurry to get the non structural outrigger cut and welded in. Prepared I also had to get to take some stuff including a bunch of numberplates from various people including Andy in Oklahoma, down to Faversham fo Neil who had helped me buy my welder from Rallyart before. I have to make up some new inner panels for the rear of the truck as they are missing too. Amazingly, 6 foot long and 2 foot high. I had contacted my regular carpet guy, Shane, to see if he had any useable offcuts to cover the panels and also a spare piece of 6x6 foot carpet for the rear floor. Got to Neil’s place and we exchanged gifts, he had made me a California black plate wall clock. Thank you mate. He also gave me a bunch of registration plates for my collection. The small,Belgian plate will, head out to Moscow, Missouri for Dave to put in his restaurant. Also from Neil. Love this small set. Then we went out to his garage to look at his Valiant, a lovely car, awaiting its engine transplant. And he offered me some red, very RED show carpet, thin, lightweight and perfect for the use I had in mind. Thanks mate, perfect.

Quick bit of randomness. The last few weeks at work have been hectic. Culminating on Friday in a marathon training, plractical and learning session. I was up at 04.00 because this sort of thing stresses and kills my head. . I read that as Marathon training!! No time for that with the rate your cracking on with the work

I was up at 04.00 because this sort of thing stresses and kills my head. . I read that as Marathon training!! No time for that with the rate your cracking on with the work I do apologise for my sometimes sloppy spelling, as I never proof read stuff once written, I tend to write and post up directly, meaning sometimes spellchecker screws around or late at night, my eyes, thick fingers and being tired causes the same. Me and marathons became best enemas or is that enemies 30 years ago. As you say, no time for running around, just laying on my back under the truck. I read that as Marathon training!! No time for that with the rate your cracking on with the work And I first read it as “Marathon Piratical Training” which I interpreted as very intense running around, with one wooden leg and a parrot on his shoulder... And the Pirate training, that one I have sorted....... I drink Rum. In other news, showing how little I know, a member on another forum pointed out that I will be having to weld up the top join of the inner sill plate as a continuous weld to pass MOT as it was solid before, but the bottom that was spot welded, can be left that way with the plug welds and spot welds I have in there. There you go, good enough reason to post my bumbling work on here, for all of you guys to ensure I do not screw up completely.

Sorry grizz, I must ensure my brain has been engaged before reading posts! Absolutely not a problem there mate. I follow a bunch of threads and sometimes they are similar, or if work precludes me from staying up to date, I miss things only to find out later a grand kid just turned one or similar. The whole cutting and welding thing is a pain as I just keep working where there is healthy metal. Some of the MOT rules also make no sense, but hey-ho.

grizz As per your request via PM: THIS....Is what I like. It took a while to get there for me, and without all you guys raising opinions and views, it would not have happened. I think it is a bit loud with all that green and the contrast on the white. But why be quiet and retiring when LOUD AND PROUD is all you have left? Let’s see what the collective has to say. I have loved the whole Sinclair Gasoline theme ever since I had my 1963 Ford Taurus Transit van. So this is a good way of rebirhing that idea. Thank you all for adding to this trucks magic. There may be other variations too, like the 76 Union gas station theme with Orange and Blue or others that you feel could work. I think solid colours and no more than three max added to the white, works here. Monday....... Back to reality.
