I came into possession of a vintage Limit desk fan, my guess is it's from the 50's. Found a bit of info about them online but nothing really in depth. I've stripped it and started rebuilding it, got the motor back together, but I'm having trouble with the oscillating function. It has a little gearbox that came out of the fan as below; The main shaft that goes through the middle spins when it is pressed (like in the video below - this fan is identical to mine). The shaft has a notch half way down (photo below) the holes in the shaft align with the holes in the brass cog when it's in the pressed position, to give an idea of where it all sits. The holes in the cog are what the two clips in the top of the image clip into. one of them was already broken when I took it apart, not sure where it sat. So I'm trying to get it all back together, but I've never seen a drive like this and I can't work out how the notch/cog system works. The power to this comes from a worm drive off the main motor that turns the smaller cog. How does the larger cog grip the shaft by a pushing motion? This wasn't working when I took it apart, but by the looks of things I'm the first to have it apart, so I don't think there's anything missing.

Well when you do let me know what the gearbox is meant to look like!! Ok, had a look, taken a pic but it doesn’t really show much other than how those clips sit. You may get away with using them with one apparently broken. They sit one on top of the other, from what I can tell. I think the little notch parts sit in the groove of the shaft and hold it in place. They cuff around the shaft part of the large cog, one on top of the other. So maybe put the broken one on first and the complete one over that to help hold it in place. Also I can’t see how to add a pic from my phone to this post...

Oh wow, thanks! Ok, I'll give it a go. I was thinking about hammering a bit of copper flat and doing something similar, so I'll see what happens!

they look like spring steel, copper would be too soft.
try going to a local hardware shop, the sort of place that sells everything and been open since 1965. they may be able to find something for you.
I'm sure I've seen similar clips on other things, I just can't place where

Mine (probably a bit more recent than 50's) is on the wall in the garage! Blades need a wipe over by the looks of it.

Put the thing back together and it's making a bit of a rattle. There's bearings front and rear, one of them has a small crack in it. I think it'll just take some aligning to get it all playing nice.
Tempted to give up on the oscillation mechanism for now!

Yep, A while back before I bolted mine on the wall I noted they were going for between £50 and £75 on eBay for ones in working order.

In other news, whilst looking around for advice on this, I've seen these fans can be worth over £150! The value on these are funny. When I bought mine about 10 years ago I thought it would be worth a lot but eBay only about £10. Then I checked again and they were selling for £250 a few years later. Then checked again and they were back down around £50. Then a little while ago I looked and they were £100+. Must be people getting keen and carried away on the bidding. Can see why though, I love my fan, only gets used three days a year but looks good the rest of the time.

I have restored a number of these fan's, it looks like you are missing the ball bearing that fits behind the copper clips.
