This is my beloved 1977 Colt Sigma which I am absolutely GUTTED that I’m having to sell. However needs must, I’m going abroad for quite a while and everything must go!
What I’m selling here is basically the 1970s on wheels. It looks like the 70s, sounds like the 70s and even smells like the 70s. There’s nothing quite like riding around town at night with the lights glinting away out front, sitting in a thick musk of musty old seats and unburned hydrocarbons. The thing is epic to be in and the soft crackle from the AM radio as you try desperately to catch Absolute Radio on LW gives that full old-timey immersion.
Not that you’ll need the radio anyway. You’ll be spending most of your time flicking through the gears, trying to hit that sweet spot in the rev range that makes the exhaust rasp. The engine sounds amazingly good for just an 8-valve. The engine itself is the Mitsubishi 4G52, the 2.0L version of the 4G family found in their cars from around that era. I think it had around 80hp from new which I imagine retains a fair amount of still. The torque curve is nice too and delivers a very drivable car.
Here’s some video of me giving it some beans to give you an idea of what it sounds like:
I’ve owned this for 5 years and in that time it has only let me down once. I’d bought some cheap points that only lasted 200 miles and it failed to start one morning. It’s reliably been my summer car every year and I’ve done around 20k in it in that time. Once myself and my partner drove it from Bristol to Inverness and back without a hitch. Such an adventure and a true testament to old Japanese car reliability, especially as the roads on the east coast of Scotland were challenging at times!
I’m the second owner of this car, the first being an old chap that I sadly did not meet before he passed. He meticulously maintained and looked after this car from new in 1977, spraying everything underneath and the engine bay with underseal (hence that weird pattern you see there now). He also Zeibarted the inside of the panels and sills which is probably the only reason it is still here today. It has 83k on the clock and although well used, the regular maintenance means it feels barely broken in. Everything feels tight and as it should be.
Mods - Not too much really. 15” Wolfrace slots all round, 20mm spacers on the rears and 2 coils chopped out the front springs.
So what’s the catch? Let’s start with the rear seats. The tops have gone frilly from UV exposure and have split. I did have plans to get them repaired and as a temporary measure (lasting 5 years… oops) I have covered them with this amazing tiger print cover though. The drivers seat leather also has a bit of a tear in it which I’ve been covering with tape to stop it splitting further.
Rust and paint. It’s an old Japanese car. It’s solid in all the right places but the bodywork isn’t a show winner. What it really needs is for the rust to be treated, ground and smoothed back. Then for the whole car to be given the respray is deserves. Most of the rust isn’t active and doesn’t need immediate attention. Here’s a video comprehensively detailing all the rust:
The fuel gauge doesn’t work really. However, it’ll always do at least 200 miles to a full tank so I’ve just used the trip computer as a reference. Over 30mpg on a run and low 20s round town.
But then, that’s why it’s up for the price it is. If you got it perfect it could easily be a 5-6k show winning car. This car is a true survivor and I very much doubt that you’ll get the chance to own one again. For me, I bought it to enjoy and drive. It lives some of its life outside, it has car park dents and mismatched paint. But who cares? It looks so fricking cool you’ll end up just driving it around as a daily like me.
If you want a car to drive, enjoy and do some light tinkering, it’s perfect. It would also be a good base for someone who wants to make an arrow straight garage queen.
All these spares come with the car including a halogen conversion kit that I didn't really get around to fitting:
MOT and tax exempt however it will come with a fresh 12 month MOT for your peace of mind.
Finally, here’s one for the “if only you were nearer” people. I will deliver this ANYWHERE in the UK provided my fuel and return trip are paid for.
Questions, offers and comments are very welcome. I’m going to miss this thing.
