This first post will be a bit long, so I apologise but its just setting the scene A bit of back story - Ive been a big Toyota fan, Japanese imports but more specifically the JZ engined cars. For those that don't know, its the legendary family of 6 cylinder, Yamaha designed petrol engines used in Soarers, Aristo's Supra's. Strong as an ox, reliable and take lots of power on a stock, unopened engine. I got my first Soarer in 1999 and I've pretty much constantly had a JZ engine car in my possession constantly since then. Mostly Aristo's (import version of the Lexus GS300 but with turbo's!!) And during that time Ive accumulated a lot of good quality bits. Ive currently got my own Supra which is, unashamedly investment material for me, aint gonna lie, 98 twin turbo facelift car, utterly and achingly stock
Ive been trying to buy this particular car for about 5 years, but the seller was having none of it, then as often happens with these things, a call out of the blue asking if I'm interested. Bish bash bosh, deal done. Now this car is a bit special, full of quality parts, HKS T51 turbo, Mishimoto this, Aeromotive that but most importantly, a Toyota V161 gearbox 6 speed box, manufactured by Getrag, very strong, very expensive. The initial plan was to get it back on the road and sounding like this
But what I wasn't told was its had been sitting about for 8 years in various garages trying to get it sorted, and 50 oafs had had a go at rewiring it. It was an absolute disaster and way beyond trying to recover. So I did what any other sane thinking man with a big turbo JZ and a 6 speed box would do, went about getting a Supra to throw the running gear into
Now onto the Supra...

Generally in the car world, I have a decent record of not losing my on cars, and in fact generally make a bit of cash. But since I had the most innocuous of rear end shunts in my E36 Ive had a really bad run of fortune, losing every single time. So why should this transaction be any different. All we wanted was a rolling shell, thats it, sub frames, suspension, some or all body panels because the engine etc was going in it. Now I'm not going to get into any stereotypes but a man not of English decent from Birmingham seemed keen to sort me out, a little too keen if you get my meaning, even to the point that when we couldn't get a delivery driver to sort the cars out in a timely fashion, he came up the same day. Something felt fishy. So we flipped another Aristo we had for a 'solid, rust free car that had just been sitting for years" And this is the point where taking time to go view a car is very apt. What we got was automotive Swiss cheese that had been dropped from the top shelf of the fridge, yep you can all guess what happens next...

That last pic was the top chassis leg, something has been punched through it at some point.

To be fair its a well trodden path with lots of knowledge available, nothing like as impressive as many of the build on here! But its more work than I normally undertake so will be interesting!

In the boot of the Aristo was this hoofing great Aeromotive pump and swirl pot set up, maybe a bit overkill for this, so may go, or may just use it anyway because it looks cool
And probably the most important part of the swap, a supra twin turbo engine harness. The Aristo one has a different engine to body lay out, and was also very forward thinking with things like ECU controlled, hydraulic powered cooling fans and a self contained, nitrogen assisted ABS/traction control unit compared to the more traditional Supra, it would make wiring a big pain in the ass. The problem with engines that don't break means second hand bits are generally hard to find, particularly these harnesses. Toyota still list them but at nearly 2 grand I think Ill pass. may look like a box of wires to you, but it a fairly important part of the swap.

If you don't mind me asking what's the '' hydraulic powered cooling fans'' about?

Looking forward to this build. Bookmarked. If you don't mind me asking what's the '' hydraulic powered cooling fans'' about? Toytota, in their infinite wisdom, gifted some models of car with a really clever, really big cooling fan that was attached to a hydraulic motor. The water pump (traditional attachment point for the fan) was a combination water and hydraulic pump, the engine ECU controlled the output of the pump thus controlling the speed of the fan. Very efficient. Only a few cars got this, downside was the combination pumps cost over a grand to replace, but the upside was it never went wrong. Here's a link www.spannerhead.com/2011/11/07/technical-curiosities-the-hydraulic-cooling-fan/
