I’ve been offered a Cosworth v6 and type 9 from a chap who’s given up finishing his kit car project
The engine looks ok, (apart from being covered in dust) obviously can’t see it running
.......he was told that the gearbox was from a turbo Technics Capri
If this is to be correct, were these updates/strengthened in any way.......is there a way of checking it’s origin?

Found some articles on the internet
Here’s a paragraph
‘It has the uprated Turbo Technics gearbox that was fitted approximately 20k miles ago. I believe this is the Gearbox that was fitted to the 230bhp model which has uprated bearings’
So are there any I.d marks to look out for

I guess I could start looking here .....
‘The heavier duty type 9s were fitted behind 2.8 and 2.9 V6s in capris and sierras. They can be identified by an additional stub below the input shaft (unless its a very early one like the one I gave to BGH). BGH can make the standard onws heavier duty but the ratios are dependant on whether they start with a 2.8 box or a 2l box. ‘

I wouldn’t take is word for that.
Unless you can prove that gearbox is uprated. Take it as a standard type 9, and depending on how hard you drive it, will possibly not last.
Best is the mt75 hybrid box, I have one in my Capri with the boa engine.

If its the right price buy it, fit it if you break it its a learning curve, there are plenty of people running around with 24v and type 9

The bloke did say that he has no way of proving if it’s true , plus it’s already mounted to the engine
Seems like a genuine chap, I’m the only one he’s spoke to about selling up.......and £300 for engine and box, I didn’t think that’s too bad

£300 is a no brainier, the engines are getting hard to find now are seem to going for £500 plus and type 9’s seem to be over £200 a go now.

I have a build thread on my Capri, the gearbox came with the donor car, I did have a hybrid mt75 built using a v6 4x4 mt75 gearbox and a 2.0 4 cylinder mt75, use the front of the 4x4 box with the back of the 4cylibder gearbox, to make a 2wd v6 box. I sold that when I bought the donor car.

personally converting the rx8 over typically adds up to just buying a good type 9 and bolting a type 9 on. plus no real such thing as a cheap rx8 box anymore.. also with an rx8 doesn't have a mechanical speedo pick up so I'm told, and also a few friends have said from experience that 1st gear is pretty useless ratio wise..
my opinion- if you can hunt a good type 9 get it. usually doing an rx8 conversion adds up not a lot less than the good old ford box. BUT if yu have a cheap good rx8 box to hand then go for it. just do NOT buy a plate from psycho engineering (google it..) use a guy called jonathan Wade I think he is from wales .

Buy any type 9 and get it rebuilt! Still relatively cheap to do. You can buy every part for them up to and including better ratio's. And, its actually possible to do it yourself if you are technically minded.
