ive a vtwin 50 ltr compressor, and its ok, does what i want it to so far. But when i use it I'm always weary that the neighbours can hear it pumping. I want to make an air box thing for it to shut it up, it annoys me when I'm in the garage it make s that much noise..
I bought a shelving system that was slightly larger and put the compressor under the bottom shelf, and put foam about it, but the compressor got hot and melted all the liquid PTFE.
Just wondered if anyone had any success at shutting one of these up a bit and how they let it breathe,,

If it's direct-drive, that's immediately half the problem with noise, they are a lot noisier than a belt driven piston-pump. As you have found you can't really enclose them at all. No matter what you do, the provisions the compressor REQUIRES to stay cool and take in cool air will mean any attempts to sound deaden will be ineffective. They need a lot of cross airflow to stay cool, the motor gets hot and by the action of what it is doing the compressor heads get very hot.
You could move it a long way away from your work space, and build a shed type affair leaving some decent breathing space but I appreciate that may not be ideal.
Bigger tank and compressor = less 'run time' for the same amount of 'tool time' Belt drive = Intrinsically quieter (but not a huge amount)
Sounds like you need at least a 100L compressor, I use a cheap ebay belt drive V twin 330l/min - 100L tank at work and it does just fine, and it's right next to my workspace, it runs infrequently enough so that it's not annoying. I know this info isn't really what you want to hear but alas a noisy compressor is just that.

why does the belt drive make it quieter?
thanks for the reply...
I was also thinking separating the tank from the motor and jsut having that in an enclosure, but how far do yo go?

The compressor is driven slower, which means it's driven more powerfully and you tend to end end up with bigger more efficient compressors fitted which are quieter and fill faster. Separating the pump gear from the receiver is pointless, you may as well move the whole thing, there is no bonus to splitting them down.

Surely whatever air tool you're using makes more noise than the compressor anyways?

Hang some heavy blankets near it , something like removal vans use . Anything to disrupt the sound travelling . Although as said you do not want to wrap the thing up . Not saying you need a solid wall either just something to stop it travelling .

I have what sounds like the same compressor And I do make an effort to keep the noise down But you can't box it in as it runs to hot and in the winter it generates lots of condensation inside
I have mine in the far corner of the garage under an open bench and that's pretty much all I can do I don't use air tools that much because the compressor can only deal with the smaller stuff And as mentioned the tools generally make more noise than the compressor I think the main problem would be if I was to paint something as the compressor would be running more than it would be off And a spray gun don't make much noise
I tend to work on a no noise between 9am and 6pm That tends to keep everyone happy I'm sure the grinder or me banging dents out of a stripped out panel van is probably a lot noisier

yes the tools are noisy, but its like when it starts and your on the phone, or or scares the life out of you too! Decided what ill do , i ordered some sound absorbent foam from ebay, click here and ill box teh sides of the compressor in with this and wood, the ends will be open, but ill get a board and mount it say 5" out so air can easily get in and noise going out will hit the deadening. That way air can get in, and heat out, but hopefully will be loads quieter.

What tools do you run off the compressor? Because it seems battery power is taking over air these days. My mates garage run battery impact and battery ratchets now, and milwakee stuff as a lot better than snap on. Compressor only really used to pump tyres.

ive a nut gun, spray gun, blow off tool, i use these regular, i have die grinder, and lots of other bits i use occasionally. Battery power is good but i like air stuff, like the nut gun works like a £300 battery one and it cost me nothing.
Air tools also tend to last a lot longer, very robust.

Air intake causes a big percentage of the noise, replacing the standard "air filter" with a proper filter (e.g. a car oil filter or if you have enough space adapt an air filter housing from a car) helps a lot.

If your compressor is sat on the floor directly or on something solid get some rubber anti vibration feet for under it. Does make a difference.
If you box it in ( no matter how loosely) you can try and extend the air filter/intake out past the box so it gets cool air to draw in rather than the hotter air from inside the box
