Price: £3500
Location: Minster, Kent (ME12 postcode)
Up for sale here is my 1983 Mitsubishi L300. This is a coachbuilt coversion by Pioneer. I'm selling due to a change in work meaning I no longer have my weekends free, so unfortunately I won't have the chance to use it much this year. Seems a shame for it to be sitting unused, so my loss could be your gain!
I originally bought this off a mate back in 2014 and used it for a year. I then sold it to another friend in 2015 as he was looking for a camper to go travelling in. He held onto it for a couple of years then decided to sell, and I ended up buying it back as it was such a good van and I missed it! Overall I've known the history of this van for about the last ten years, and in that time it's been a great van.
GENERAL:
The van is currently showing 87600 miles, though the odometer stopped working in 2014. Having known the full history of it since then, I can guarantee it has done no more than an extra 5000 miles since then. It has MOT until July 23rd 2019, having just passed with no issues whatsoever.
MECHANICAL:
The van has a 1.6 litre petrol engine and 4 speed gearbox with column shift. The van was last serviced a couple of thousand miles back, but has been sitting over the winter, so you may want to give it a once over just as a precaution. Saying that I took it out of hibernation this week after not being used all winter and it started second turn of the key! I took it out for a spin, drove it to the MOT centre and back home and it drove just like it did last time I used it, so I can't fault it. Cambelt was done within the last 10000 miles, so should be good for some time all being well. Only negative thing to say is obviously due to it's size and weight it isn't going to win any races Sits comfortably at 50mph, but it's never going to cruise along at 70mph. Mechanically everything works as it should to the best of my knowledge.
EXTERIOR:
The van is 35 years old, so the bodywork is far from perfect. Equally though I've seen many vehicles from this year that look a lot worse! There are various dents and dinks over the body, please bare in mind this is a thin skinned van, similar to a caravan, so it doesn't take much to dent it! There is some rust in the A pillars, but nothing structural or an MOT concern. A previous owner (possibly Stevie Wonder!) has been overzealous withe the sealant which looks a bit untidy. However on the plus side it does mean the van has no leaks that I am aware off. Having been outside all winter there is no sign or smell of damp. Privacy glass fitted to the rear window. One of the rear side windows is a bit cloudy, so could ideally do with replacing, but still functions as it should with no issue. Only other bad point to note is one of the external compartment doors is missing. Again, doesn't affect the use of the van. I've been looking out for a replacement, but these things don't come up for breaking too often. Being realistic I don't think it would be too difficult to make a replacement from a small sheet of plastic. The van is currently sat on a set of 17" Oz Racing wheels fitted 225/45/17 tyres up front, and 265/40/17s out back. Definitely gives it a much better look in my opinion. The standard wheels are included in the sale too (admittedly it does drive better on the standards, but it doesn't look as good!).
INTERIOR:
This is where the van really comes into its own. Despite the relatively small appearance compared to modern motorhomes, the van is like a tardis inside. Up front is a fetching basketweave triple seat (with rip in driver's seat). Above this there is a double bunk, which comfortably sleeps two. Behind this is the side door, and opposite this is the 'bathroom'. This includes a toilet, sink and shower! Cold water only, but I'm sure it could be heated up if you really wanted to. Next to the side entrance is the kitchen unit with sink, triple hob and grill, plus cupboard and fridge below (fridge untested!). Opposite this is the oven (you could pretty much cook a three course meal in this van!), plus a wardrobe underneath which houses the leisure battery (not been used for a while so could probably do with charging/replacing). Carry on further back and you reach the dining/seating area. Comfortable sits a family of four. The table also drops down to convert the area into another double bed. So you can easily sleep four in total (plus a child on the front seats if you really wanted!). Plenty of storage above the rear seats too. The van has a 240V hook up (I've never used it, we've always wild camped), and the lighting and water pump run is 12V running off the leisure battery. As said the van has not been camped in since last year, so it may be worth getting the internal electrics checked over for piece of mind (or maybe I'm just being overly cautious).
Van is located in Minster, Kent (ME12 postcode). Viewing more than welcome and actively encouraged. Please don't turn up expecting a £40000 motorhome, this is a 35 year old vehicle with faults as listed and is priced accordingly. Similarly don't expect it to fit in your single garage. It's not the biggest of vehicles, but it's still a fair size. Any questions please feel free to ask. Will also be on ebay this week should you prefer to take your chances there.
